I can tell you that general commercial roles typically require almost zero weekend work if you’re capable of setting boundaries
Oh absolutely agree. Being commercial minded, likable, trusted (being able to stand up to clients respectfully) are probably more important than long hours. But it helps too that you take your clients project seriously and don’t mind working outside of normal hours if the project is important/time sensitive enough.
I’ve never been a schmoozer so the way I build relationships with other lawyer/departments within legal is offering my time/expertise, even if it means I need to do a little extra work some nights to finish everything.
I was in same boat. 8 YOE M&A attorney wanting the same so went in house doing M&A for a large company and have haven’t worked a weekend or past 6 pm in almost a year. Take the pay cut if there is one (if there isn’t pls reach out and maybe hire me). Do it.
Our M&A attorneys work hard but I don’t think nights and weekends are common.
I did m&a and finance in house for about 30 years. Worked a few overnights and weekends. Maybe 50 total in 30 years not including times I had to fly out on Sunday night.
I feel like M&A in major corporations manage projects and farm out most of the work. I’m a non M&A lawyer so this is just my observation.
