Does anyone know what recourse a NYC tenant has against a neighbor with a dog that barks incessantly. I like dogs- I get dogs bark. But I’m WFH and have zooms and this is becoming a nuisance. Has anyone dealt with this before/any advice? Should I try to talk to the neighbor or will that screw me over/risk retaliation if and when I have to write a formal complaint to the landlord office...

Talk to the neighbor. Maybe they’ll actually try to fix the issue. If that fails, go to landlord / building management. I personally don’t agree that anyone should feel guilty about informing a neighbor of a problem and/or worry about “making the neighbor upset.” Plus if you go straight to management you can’t control what they will do. Could be nothing, or maybe they go nuclear on barking dog complaints and will demand that the person get rid of the dog. That would make me feel guilty if I didn’t try a gentler approach first!

I live in a duplex where my neighbor must have been babysitting a dog. For two days it barked constantly, partly because they would leave it in the fenced in backyard for hours, including at 3:00am. It was so frustrating because I knew they were home and could hear it just as bad as we could, PLUS the dog was outside and I felt bad. Since they were home when the dog barked constantly, I didn't feel bad skipping the curtesy and went straight to the landlord. I never heard the dog again.

Have you raised the issue with the landlord? Presuming by neighbor you mean in the same building

like

Yes absolutely talk to your neighbor first. I adopted a dog during covid who now has severe separation anxiety and I feel absolutely awful when I have to leave him home alone, but I have no idea how noisy he is when I’m gone. I have never had any complaints so I am assuming he isn’t a nuisance to my neighbors. But, if my dog were disruptive, I would be so grateful if my neighbors came to tell me that it’s an issue so we could work something out. And for what it’s worth, I think all responsible dog owners would absolutely do whatever they need to fix the situation (dog daycare, dog walker, etc.) You should at least approach them first and see what they can do to fix this before taking it to your landlord.

Good luck!!

They should know better than to get a loud dog when they're not allowed under the lease. If it's a puppy then maybe there's a chance it'll get quieter but if it's an adult dog, you may want to have a conversation with them about it if you're friendly with the neighbors.

like

This is a silly post. Talk to neighbor. I was that neighbor years ago and I fixed it in a day. I just didn’t know my dog was loud when I was gone. Going over the neighbor’s head and filing some kind of action is inappropriately confrontational.

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.
