Does anyone lie about their age to their client? I'm 26, and have meetings with some older client sometimes and the question of age sometimes comes up - I feel like my age loses me cred.

Started at age 21. You act like a kid you get treated like a kid. You act like a professional you get treated like a professional. Your choice.

@op I got into this industry when I was a little younger than you. Had the same questions. I'd tell them my age and then tell them why my age benefited them. Because of my age, they'd have me helping them for the rest of their life. Compared to working with an older advisor who retired at a time they needed financial guidance the most. Then I'd ask them, do you want to potentially change advisors and start from scratch when you're in your 70's or 80's? Just my two cents, it seemed to work for me. That was 17 years ago.

Don't lie, own up to it. If you're good at your job and actually connect with them on topics that matter, "cred" based on age won't matter. I'm the same age, and doing just fine

like

Instead of "how old" I get "how long have you been an advisor" which is harder to dodge

like

Don't lie about your age. If you are good at what you do, then they will be pleasantly surprised.

@ AE Noble... yeah, the beard doesn’t work well for me (girl). I tried, sigh.

I started at 24. I just turned 31 yesterday. I have over 40mm under management already. You'll be fine.

Tell them you're 45 but you have a really good face cream.

I’m 25. When I talk to older clients/prospects I remind them that they will probably want an advisor to see them all the way through retirement. Not someone who will retire at the same time as them and they’ll be on their own.

At our firm we try and “team” up older advisors with your age (even if it’s me) for client meetings to help this. An older advisor is also a mentor and we usually have it set up for succession for the younger. Everyone is treated as a partner and we have profit share from the firms revenue to incentivize the firm getting all the clients that we can. Haven’t had a problem with that. But I can’t stress enough, DON’T EVER LIE to a client about anything. You hold probably the second most important thing in their lives in your hands. If you lie and are caught, the best case is you only lose them, but trust me, they will talk and you will loss more.

I didn't lie but generalized. "Oh I'm almost 30" ... for the last 4 years is what I've been saying. :)

Never lie. Never ever allow someone to question your integrity. Young and inexperience doesn’t equal wisdom. You can be “wise beyond your years” but it requires integrity.
