Does anyone notice there has been an increase of Asian Americans suddenly trying to benefit from initiatives fought for by Black Americans while claiming their struggle trumps that of Black Americans? I find it strange. At my firm, I am a senior exec who have seen Black colleagues fight for 7+ years for diversity initiatives and we have finally gotten some notice at my firm. Nobody wants to be a minority until itā€™s beneficial to be one. And I peep the game and the change in behavior

I feel Asians enjoyed proximity to whiteness until it was no longer beneficial to them.

They really thought they were one of them until those tables turned during Covid. I just sat there and ate my food because they never stood by or up for us. šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

When I brought this up in this very bowl MONTHS ago, I was shouted down.

I have worked heavily for years in the DEI space so I peep it. I peeped who used to oppose DEI as well. It was many Asian colleagues who didnā€™t want to be associated with it since they didnā€™t want to shake the table. But now, after Black colleagues have fought hard against the opposition and ushered in a framework for equity (and some have lost their jobs due to dissent), Asian colleagues are in uproar about their supposed lack of DEI benefits and more attention placed on Black and Hispanic initiatives. You werenā€™t there shooting at the gym. Thatā€™s WHY. You canā€™t be quiet and absent from a process due to wanting to conform and then get mad that the people who fought blood, sweat and tears are getting a LITTLE something. And we still ainā€™t getting much!

Iā€™m at a lost about what to do here. I may have move on to a different line of work. Itā€™s painful

like

Um, I have so much I want to say but all I can muster is a rising tide lifts all boats. I get it your POV but I donā€™t agree with it. You are saying that some of your Asian American coworkers and saying their struggle is similar, I think comparing struggles isnā€™t beneficial if the same outcome is desired.

But also in the past 2 years their has been a general shift in favor of DEI across America. Maybe OP is perceiving that and taking it negatively instead of positively.

like

Unfortunately, it is hard to take it positively when it is seen by Asian Americans as a ā€œbattleā€ with AAs for resources and attention. Iā€™m fine with other groups helping DEI. Itā€™s needed. But donā€™t turn it into the oppression Olympics and a ā€œbut look at what you gave Black peopleā€.

Donā€™t bring us in it. Asian American DEI shouldnā€™t be full of resentment for the attention that Black people get. Thatā€™s my point. Leave us out of it. We fought long and hard for every ā€œbenefitā€ our community has gotten. Nothing was just handed to us

like

OG POV - OP has some valid points but letā€™s remember this whole all oppressed groups inclusive thing with black folks wasnā€™t really a thing until Fred Hamptonā€™s version of the Black Power movement. Which was rooted more in economic empowerment vs racial.

The original BP movement was very much black only and anti Asian due to the tension between those groups in the Bay Area during the early 20 century.

Asians struggle with many of the same cultural dynamics we do (color politics, infighting, etc) which is why yes they have been ā€œbenefitingā€ from our winsā€¦But we have also quietly benefited from theirs aka ā€œthe model Minorityā€ concept. As this is how much of the Ivy League became ā€œcomfortableā€ with the presence of black folks as originally only Harvard and University of Chicago accepted ā€œusā€.

Someone said ā€œrising tides lifts all boatsā€ this is fundamentally what Chairman Fred understood better than the core of the Black Panther party leadership, which is why he along with Dr King were such threats to the power structure.

As much as the ā€œsoldierā€ in me loves the rhetoric of ā€œold Malcomā€ the warrior in me knows the rhetoric and approach of Chairman Fred, ā€œnew Malcomā€ and ā€œnew Dr Kingā€ is the way to the equality we all seek.

Be warriors not soldiersā€¦

Iā€™m a black DEI practitioner/consultant and I find this argument to be unfruitful. Even even AAPI folks benefit from what the black ergs/brgs are doing, so what? The goal should be equity in your workplace. Your focus should be to help your fellow black colleagues and if other folks can benefit from your work, all the better.

Every minority group faces its own kind of discrimination at the workplace. This divisiveness is whatā€™s keeping us down. Leverage what theyā€™re doing too. Benefit from their work, benefit from your womenā€™s network, benefit from the LGBT groupā€™s work. Hell the LGBT group is most likely run by some woke white person that can further your agenda. Stop this divisiveness and focus on allyship. Make it better for every BiPoc in your organization.

like

In the workplace, I will never compare Asian Americans with BIPOC. My firm is almost 25% Asian. Black colleagues represent 2%. The Ivy League is predominantly Asian yet Black students represent less than 6%.

The needs of BIPOC community are just so different and I donā€™t think that other groups should always have to benefit off of what we fought for. Iā€™m just not into this

like

Doesnā€™t surprise me at all

I have noticed as a cultural block, we are far more fractured and disorganized. We need to do better. Point. Blank. Period
Thereā€™s power in uniting behind the shared struggles as BIPOC, thatā€™s why thereā€™s so many work to keep us divided.

Please donā€™t do that work for them.

We can acknowledge the atrocities experienced by others AND the threats specifically designed to demonize our people in the existing political, social, and economic infrastructure.

like

Whatā€™s does this mean?

Itā€™s simple my guy weā€™ve sold ourselves to the BLM/Oppression mentalityā€¦

Think about itā€¦ how does it look when BLM is associated w. violence (since BLM inessense is just a label that can be patched on a vest) and they can use that label to claim ā€œally shipā€ but then cultural superiority since the BLM label is a virtue signal associated w. being woke/aligned w. the movement.

So in essence every label thatā€™s pro-black is also a label that can be used by other ā€œracesā€ to then appended w. cultural superiority since their movements donā€™t cause property damage, in most cases that get destroyed (I.e. ā€œthe streetsā€), but are displayed in business/education/social-economic discussions that are often held at a higher regard.

Iā€™m from Nigeria and came as a young child and to see how weā€™ve romanticized oppression and struggle vs. equality of ALL races is ironic as itā€™s had the the adverse affect and it will only get more stark.

Think about how IT and all TOP tech is now Indian+
and even sports/entertainment is shifting to Spanish+ (we had a brief season w. Black Panther šŸ˜‚)

The whole situation is pretty hilarious TBH and I canā€™t misunderstand the hustle, which is why I refuse to be a punchline/label myself w. the grain.

Long story short they benefit from those initiatives and you should aim for higher since all that ish is low level scraps šŸ”šŸ™šŸ¾šŸ™ŒšŸ¾āœŠšŸ¾

I saw this on yahoo last night and itā€™s just funny how itā€™ll be marked as Asian-American then ā€”> some black šŸ˜…

@A2 Nigerian here and I do not subscribe to the BS @D1 is spewing. @A2 you are also generalizing which is non productive at best.

@D1 I feel sorry for you because it will hit you one day. You and your family came here to a system that gave you a clean slate. Just because you weren't on AA or federal assistance does not mean you didn't benefit.

But why should everyone have to fight the same fight? If DEI is important and fair, then, why do we want the next group of underrepresented people to go through the same fight?

Seems like a wastage of energy and resources.
