Does anyone of you work with foreign lawyers or know any foreign lawyers who made their way either in Big Law or in house in the US?

Yes, my firm has a Latam group full of foreign lawyers who are US qualified.

Plenty. Some are more lucky than others. Most need LLM or JD (especially from non-common law countries) to sit for the bar first and then they are competing with local folks. What’s your background?

like

Not sure about in house transfers in general (which could be done 🤷🏻‍♂️ who knows), but if you are going to try to get into BL (which is super hard even for “homegrown” kids), you may need to be ready to start from scratch. Once you get your JD or LLM and NY or CA bar, in the firm’s eyes you are still a fresh grad and will be starting as a first year or even a non-partner track (basically all other BL arrangements outside of the regular partner track ladder, think staff attorneys, foreign attorneys, etc). So be ready to be an older guy or gal (30s/40s with kids?) to compete agains 24 year olds (they call them K-JDs here) with no kids or other obligations for the same starting positions and once you start for the same work and billables. Of course some folks may have different views/paths, but in general none of your prior life transfers and you need to start over. On the bright side, people you work for rarely care about your age, there are tons of career switchers in this space, but young people you compete with do care (and annoyingly always remind you how yound they are). Welcome to America my friend 🇺🇸🥳

Yes, I know someone from London who got her llm here but they worked at a big firm in the UK first

Plenty of those with LLMs from a US uni + NY/CA bar in transactional practices.

Yes. Same. Work in latam with lots of foreign attys who got full time gigs.

I'm from a common law country with a US LLM. Made it to BigLaw in NY, working as a litigator!

I think the move is easy if you are a transactional lawyer with solid experience. Getting a job in litigation as a non-American was not easy, even though I had substantial litigation experience in my home country.

Yes, regular track. It's really putting forward a case that you bring good value. That you have experience that is valuable (this is the key, ideally common law country, otherwise it is a difficult sell) but you are prepared to start at a more junior level. It's a win-win.

I am a foreign trained lawyer, starting the LLM in tax at Georgetown this fall. I am hoping to break into Biglaw afterwards, if not immediately at some point after getting some experience in public accounting.

I feel that as a corporate lawyer, you’re mostly doing the necessary details to carry out someone else’s decisions (= EG the boring part of business). The most "strategic" advice you give is perhaps advising on a choice between transaction models.

Would only a law degree and big law transactional experience be sufficient to go into more traditional business roles?
