Does anyone on here not believe in global warming? If so, why?

Not a believer in man caused global warming. Earth weather is long term cyclical. Anyone telling you different is trying to control your life in the name of global warming or selling you something. There was a big scare in the 70s about global cooling.

like

Really, Goldman SSachs? So the vast majority of the world's scientist have gotten it wrong? I agree that the earth's temperature is cyclical, but recent trends have completely gone against the grain. http://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/

It might be true or it might not be. But why not have a carbon tax ?

like

What about how the government forces lower labor with income taxes or lower investment with capital gains taxes ? This is no worse, but better because carbon may be bad

As long as there is no observable causality between human emission activity and temperature change (to the level of pushing a ball and watching it move physical observability) there will be skeptics. The skepticism itself doesn't bother me, it's the lack of responsibility for taking care of the the planet. Even if global warming were a hoax, there are 100 different good reasons to reduce emissions.

like

Those who make a living from global warming alarmism have a lot to gain from perpetuating global warming alarmism. Those who are skeptical of global warming have very little interest in becoming climate scientists. Profit motive and adverse selection work together to build a pretty loud coalition.

Just another level of government control- simple as that

Blackstone: a good read- Thomas Kuhn "the structure of scientific revolutions"

Why have any tax? Its a growth of government involvement and control of our lives. It may start out small but rarely if ever goes away. Once started, it will grow. The US still has a department of energy created under Jimmy Carter to end our dependency on foreign oil.

GS2: good thinking. Carbon tax has its advantages-easier to administer and possibly enforce. A tax will establish a price for carbon emissions and allow the market to determine the quantity of emission reduction. Alternatively a carbon credit, sets the quantity of carbon emission reduction and let's market set the price. Credits may be a more attractive incentive towards abatement.

There is a need for some revenue. What would u rather have less of: work, investment or carbon (income tax, capital gains tax, carbon tax) ?

^^ exactly, and use a combo of both depending on the industry- ex. tax for transportation and credit for utility

The idea is that even if u don't have a view about global warming, the government still needs some revenues. That militates for a tax only

True and if u want to spur new growth industries you also apply credits and offsets which incentivize certain industries to adopt newer technologies. The trickle down effect still leads to growth and jobs , which implies an increase and diversified revenue steams for possible taxation

The problem with credits is fraud or unintended beneficiaries. Look up the paper industry benefiting for biofuel- a credit in no way intended for them. Obama closed that loophole when a maximum ash content was added to the requirement.

I'll check out that paper. You raise a valid point and that problem described is a risk associated with frontier/ exploratory markets. So Risk management is key. Credits may be appropriate for select industries. Great article by brookings institute on pricing carbon that speaks to cost/benefit of tax and credit and select industry application, where prudent. Net-net, the choice of strategy is not binary and entails a combo of short term and long term considerations

No we should not become vegetarians! Do you prevent a lion from hunting and eating meat? No! Even hyenas serve a carnivorous purpose, balancing the food chain. We are part of the food web so don't fuck with it. #whereismymeat

Recently received pay bump to stay with my bank by leveraging 2 outside offers. I have been offered a VP2 role (currently VP1) with another group within the bank. More work, but really interesting role doing the same work but for different clients. Hiring manager essentially said it would be a lateral move with no pay bump because I am now making market. Would you still ask for standard 10% promotion bump given I am moving from VP1 to VP2 role & taking on more work?
