A lot of us on here are doing MBAs which is why we are in this bowl, so I think you’ll get some biased answers. I think the best thing to do is look at the folks in positions where you’d like to be in 5-10 years and see if they generally have MBAs or not. If yes, are any EMBAs or part time, or did they all do the typical 2-year full time? What tier school? For the ones that don’t have MBAs, what other experience do they have that sets them apart? Maybe even set up some phone calls to discuss their decision with them or their path to where they are now.
I am not a consultant but I deeply regret not getting an MBA. I am in tech and I feel my brain is not wired for tech. I do fine but I don’t feel excited. When I see my counter parts who have done MBA, their work is far more fulfilling and exciting. After mba every business sector and your choice of field opens to you. Like product marketing , finance, customer success, program manage, technical product manager, strategy, analytics... even the growth is exponential. Take it from a slightly older millennial your parents are right. I am now mid 30s and I am planning to get an executive mba. I don’t want to regret for the rest of my life.
You’re answering your own question my friend. We don’t have the context to your exact situation. You do. And given your responses, you’re dealing with FOMO, which is not a legitimate reason to do an MBA.
I don’t agree that the 180k current salary should stop you from pursuing an MBA. I make a decent salary. For me, it’s the network and growth potential. Additionally, the two years to reset and gear up / transition to my next phase.
Look at the numbers. You’re worse off going for an MBA.
lol what? This is so misleading.
You don’t need an mba. Is this a serious question?

Don’t listen to your boomer parents
Gotta think for yourself my friend. Don't let your parents determine what your career path should be, using outdated information from when they were going through the ranks
This^
If I had a penny for every time my parents asked me to make decisions based on their own warped sense of “wisdom/experience” from an era where tech firms barely even existed...make the decision for yourself based on your experience and gut. If you build your career based on the advice of dinosaurs, it might end up like them (extinct).
Not saying do (or don’t) an MBA. Just saying do the research and make the call yourself and not cause your parents are telling you to do so. :)
I think you’re smart enough to crunch the numbers to know an MBA makes no sense for you. Also, any doors an MBA will open are already available to you. I also wouldn’t listen to folks suggesting exec or Pt mba’s either - they’re just cash cows for schools and provide minimal to no additional value
Take it from someone that did consulting, mba, and strategy then product in tech, you’re not missing out on anything. Unless you’re aching for a 2 year break from work, I can’t think of any tangible reason someone in your position should pursue an MBA

@SC1 Stanford GSB has an MsX, which is basically an exec MBA.
Do an MBA. The people commenting don’t have one. Simple as that. Looking at comp post school doesn’t paint the full picture of continued growth down the line. You’ll be at a much higher trajectory with a top mba and you have to factor in intangibles like network
You’re in a post MBA role, don’t do an MBA. At worst, if you really want that degree on your resume, do a part time or exec one. Please ignore your parents
Why do you day PT or EMBA won’t do anything? Pretty sure it helps you to grow in you current industry or job function. Plus the network.

Why don’t you wait til your company IPOs (assuming it’s soon) and then just apply to HSW, if you get in just treat it as a two year vaca and networking event, if not then just move on.
In a similar position, and have opted to stay in my tech firm until vesting/ipo. The upside is way too good compared to the opportunity cost of the mba.
Thinking is that if my NW grows significantly (>1MM) by my early 30s, then money will not be an issue and I will pursue an advanced degree for the education factor rather than tactical compensation needs.
I’m more curious where you’re working now and if they’re hiring
Do not do an MBA
Gotta make your own decisions here.
What do your parents know more about your specific goals, industry, trajectory, etc that you don’t? Additionally, I’m sure they came from a time when MBAs meant more. Are you sure they’re not just telling you to do it so they can brag about it to their friends? What’s their main reason to push for an MBA?
Not sure honestly. My parents are both immigrants, neither of whom have an MBA. I think they just don’t want me to regret leaving anything on the table.
At your compensation level and your role, I don’t really think the mba makes sense (unless you want it more for the experience aspect or your work wants you to get it for moving up). Remember that your parents generation is one where mbas were valued differently than how they are valued in today’s workforce.
I personally think an mba is worth it for the experience since at our projected income levels we probs wont miss the money long term. Could you wait till post IPO to apply? If you’re only at 2 yoe you have quite a few years to work before you’re older than avg for the top mba programs
How did you get your pm role? Was your comp 180k initially?
I just applied on LinkedIn honestly. But I did a lot of consulting work in tech / product strategy. And I just started at the role and the starting comp they gave was 150 base + 30 RSU break down (that’s doubled to 60 since latest round of funding). I’m fairly confident the company will IPO in a year or so, so I’m counting the 30 in my TC.
