Does anyone see a shift in the industry wherein less emphasis is placed on billiable hours? I used to work at a firm where the average stint for an associate is 1 year or less. They lost clients as the clients got sick of seeing a new associate on their files every 6 months. The founding partner was near retirement so his goal was to maximize revenue rather than long term career development. I don’t see this as sustainable especially given millennial culture emphasis on work-life balance.

I have been an associate at that kind of firm before. Depending on the practice area, it will probably lead to more small firms and solo firms popping up because people are cycling through firms gaining experience without planting any roots.

To answer your first question, no.

No. One way or another someone has to pay for our salaries and the partners' ridiculous cars. Associates who don't appreciate this need to go in house ASAP imo.

Does higher vault ranking (v10-30 compared to v80-100) open more doors for corporate in-house opportunities for a senior associate? If chambers practice area rankings and expected billable hours are similar and they offer the same DPW pay scale, does it matter less? Is it better to stay at/lateral to a firm where you might be able last longer to learn the necessary skills? Any personal anecdote or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Every PM job posting I see in big tech/FAANG requires a MINIMUM of 5+ years experience, and a large portion even require 7+ years. Most of the associate/rotational PM roles require 3+ years and some require 5+. Yet it seems like every 24 year old I know that went to a target school is now a PM in big tech… am I the only one confused?
