Holiday hierarchy based on how likely I am to actually get any time off: Christmas, thanksgiving, New Years, July 4 - Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge gap - Memorial Day, Labor Day, MLK, Presidents’ Day, Juneteenth

A3, those aren’t bank holidays

Yep. My company has made it a holiday. We don’t work on holidays. One of the perks of being in-house, holidays are actually days off

like

Completely agree. BUT secretly considering just using the time to work a little without interruption 😅

Most firms don’t really tell you take off on holidays like Juneteenth because the incentive to tell you not to bill isn’t there. Unless you’re on a live deal that’s running down to the wire (especially if cross-border with folks that won’t know it’s a holiday), you should otherwise take the day off. It’s an important day to put into our calendars, I think.

like

It’s a holiday in my office, so I get it off anyway (this year we get the 20th off because the 19th is Sunday).

like

I’m also in biglaw, get the day off for Juneteenth and do not plan to work more than the one-off holding-em-off-until-tomorrow email from my phone.

Juneteenth, or any holiday for that matter, is just a work remote situation. For all of you that get “real” days off, you make me peanut butter and jelly.

like

I just bill because there is work to be done and clients couldn’t give a shit about holidays or personal events or anything besides closing the deal. Pretty simple, but that is what the money is for and nobody is forcing me to stay at this job.

like

This is Now a federal holiday so everyone should get it off

likefunny

Nobody cares here. Business as usual.

White people shouldn't get the day off. HTH

funny

Lol. Jokes on me. 🤣
It's Father's day anyways. A4 can take this round. Bla bla.

Yes, but I work for the federal government, so 🤷‍♀️

Yeah we get it off and my clients (banks) have it off. I'll have work to do tho

like

Still not sure what to make of Juneteenth. I'll take the day off (unless clients come knocking). But AAs were not "free" after June 19, 1865. So mixed feelings about this holiday for me.

It’s a federal holiday.

Firm lawyers understand that holidays are imaginary and the real holidays are when you have a break between deadlines. I want to honor Juneteenth but have briefs due and billables to meet. Unless firms start giving out billable credit for holidays, most won’t take them.

like

Yes

like

We got an email about “celebrating” but no day off. Followed by an email saying the building wasn’t closed

like

Holidays aren’t real in this profession - it’s not like get 8 billable hours for the day and no one is going to go like ah you are short this month because of Veterans Day, thank you for honoring our service members.

like

Its a Federal Holiday and our firm observes it (so we get Monday off). Interestingly though...the firm doesn't observe Veteran's Day. You have to prove to HR that you are in fact a Veteran in order to get the day off.

I have a big filing getting out the door today and then out of town guests coming, so planning to work very little (and it is a firm holiday). Last year we had it off and it was quiet. I’m a litigator though, it’s a different world.

I take the day off whenever the office is closed. I may work a little bit Monday because it wasn’t announced until a few days ago that we were getting the day off, and we have some deadlines to meet. I’m at a plaintiff’s firm, so I don’t have to worry about billables. At my prior firm, which I did have to bill at, I would generally work in the mornings on holidays and take the rest of the day off.

It’s a holiday at my current firm. At my former firm, I used PTO for Juneteenth and MLK day. Former firm didn’t recognize/give firm holiday for MLK day until 2021.

Jones Day?

Thoughts on CAIA? Difficulty, hours studied, study tips, overall experiences, etc.? I’ll be sitting for Level 1 in September. Currently work in the fund of funds space - moving over to my firm’s hedge fund research team soon so CAIA seemed like a perfect way to get knowledge in the area beforehand. I’m almost one year out of undergrad (econ background) so a lot of the CAIA content is new to me

Is a daily 1.5 hour commute (total) worth a more supportive work environment and better benefits?
Thinking of jumping ship after just 6 months in a fully remote position for an in-house, in person job where expectation is 5d/week in person. Commute would be around 90minutes/day in interstate. Better salary, good 401k match, parental leave (20 weeks paid), 4wks PTO, and a very big name for the resume. 3 YOE. But I love the flexibility of remote work, so struggling to decide.

Any insight???

Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.

Explain it like I’m 5…how does partnership in a mid-sized civil litigation firm work? How long until an associate is considered for partner? Buy in’s? How does the compensation play out? If partners also get a salary, how does the percentage equity get paid? Also does % equity mean they get a % of the amounts billed by anyone only on matters that originated with the partner or is it with all matters? (Context and more description in comment below)
