Does anyone try to make "friends" at work, or do you keep it strictly professional?

Strictly professional with some non-team acquaintances if we really click. I stay out of the gossip and it seems to inevitably come up the closer the relationship gets. Also I assume if I share personal stuff with one person then I’ve shared it with several on the team (because of aforementioned reason). I always have great recommendations and work performance, too, so I think this approach has helped me.

I definitely make true friends at work. I don't go out of my way to do so but I don't fight it if it happens organically.

Thinking back to my childhood all of my dads friends were guys he worked with and the older I get the harder it is to make friends outside of work, especially when you're in this industry. Being from Boston it's especially hard because everyone already has their groups of friends, especially if they went to school here and are generally pretty closed off and unfriendly to begin with.

My best friend of years and years is someone I work with. We keep each other sane because no one else understands (or would believe) the madness.

All of my friends are people I met at work. Work friends are amazing.

Strictly professional. Most of my personal friends are from school and my family. I have work and professional acquaintances. Most people conflate various levels of personal friendships with acquaintances.

like

At times, although not recently given the pandemic. Group settings are great for acquaintances. If there are professional events or it makes sense to go to a HH with a group from work I will.

like

I tend to make friends in departments completely unrelated to mine, so that our work doesn't interfere, but I can still see them regularly.

like

“Try to make”? Lol no but if it just happens naturally then that’s cool. The only thing I need from work though is my direct deposit.

I become best friends with everyone at work lol it just happens!

I used to make close friends with coworkers and it very rarely works out long term. I’ve found focusing my energy outside of work with family and other friends leads to far less drama.

Oh yeah work friends are a must 👏

like

My best friends are people I have worked with. When you start working with each other at 22, it’s kind of inevitable to not be lifetime friends lol you grow together and mold each other.

like

I made a ton of friends at work. Helps to deal with the stress

like

Yes. Although with some the connection fades when we stop work together so if I want to maintain it I have to make an effort to stay in touch. Sometimes it’s worth it.

like

I prefer to keep it strictly professional because people like to gossip at my job so you never know when your business might become the topic of conversation. However, I’ll never know when I might need some professional references so I try to keep it friendly.

like

Omg yes! I'd go insane without them.

The thought of the alternative is sooooo depressing!!

like

I like to keep a bit of a distance, and if it is natural then make friends.

like

Friendly - yes, always
Friends - not really; consultants are far too competitive to be trusted as friends

like

Not keeping me from having friends but friends at work. I have lots of acquaintances and people I like to spend time and have fun with, but I would not term that as friendship. Maybe, depends on how one defines friends too.

Is this a hookup thread (joking)

I have only worked from home with my current company, so no watercooler talk unlike previous companies. Do people find they hear less than they used to about the inner workings of their companies because there's no extemporaneous chit chat around the office?

During a weekly status call, a US based manager in my organization stated “the recruiters need to find fewer candidates with English as a second language” in reference to the fact that we just hired a person of Indian heritage. We are a global company and about 1/3rd of our employees are from outside of the US/UK. I reported the manager to HR along with several other times that he has acted in a racist manner.

What's more important for business longevity?
Value your customer's needs or your employees sanity/ mental wellness?

The company I work for clearly value the customer more and I feel that it's not aligned to my personal values :(
It makes me wonder if I'm the "crazy" one to believe the company should value their people first?

My last firm there was this manager who was 45 and divorced who didn't not give 2 shts about his job

He would come in at 10, leave at 11, not return until 4p, and then leave at 5pm

When he would come back at 4pm, his hair would either be wet and he'd proudly say he went swimming or his hair would be shorter and he'd equally as proudly say he got a haircut

I have too many stories about this guy until one day he just up and quit with no notice bc he hated his job
