Does anyone try to make "friends" at work, or do you keep it strictly professional?

All of my friends are people I met at work. Work friends are amazing.

My best friend of years and years is someone I work with. We keep each other sane because no one else understands (or would believe) the madness.

Hell yeah. Who else am I going to share memes with?

like

Yes shared love of memes/gifs is vital

Strictly professional. Most of my personal friends are from school and my family. I have work and professional acquaintances. Most people conflate various levels of personal friendships with acquaintances.

like

At times, although not recently given the pandemic. Group settings are great for acquaintances. If there are professional events or it makes sense to go to a HH with a group from work I will.

like

I tend to make friends in departments completely unrelated to mine, so that our work doesn't interfere, but I can still see them regularly.

like

“Try to make”? Lol no but if it just happens naturally then that’s cool. The only thing I need from work though is my direct deposit.

like

I have no friends.

I’ve made some amazing, beautiful, lifelong friends through work.

like

I try not to but I always do

I’m the opposite, I always want to but never do 🎻😅

like

I become best friends with everyone at work lol it just happens!

like

I used to make close friends with coworkers and it very rarely works out long term. I’ve found focusing my energy outside of work with family and other friends leads to far less drama.

likesmart

Oh yeah work friends are a must 👏

like

My best friends are people I have worked with. When you start working with each other at 22, it’s kind of inevitable to not be lifetime friends lol you grow together and mold each other.

like

I made a ton of friends at work. Helps to deal with the stress

like

Yes. Although with some the connection fades when we stop work together so if I want to maintain it I have to make an effort to stay in touch. Sometimes it’s worth it.

like

I prefer to keep it strictly professional because people like to gossip at my job so you never know when your business might become the topic of conversation. However, I’ll never know when I might need some professional references so I try to keep it friendly.

like

Omg yes! I'd go insane without them.

The thought of the alternative is sooooo depressing!!

like

I like to keep a bit of a distance, and if it is natural then make friends.

like

Friendly - yes, always
Friends - not really; consultants are far too competitive to be trusted as friends

like

Not keeping me from having friends but friends at work. I have lots of acquaintances and people I like to spend time and have fun with, but I would not term that as friendship. Maybe, depends on how one defines friends too.

Is this a hookup thread (joking)

I am generally uncomfortable when I’m around my mother-in-law’s husband.

While he is overall a decent guy, his anger issues, yelling at his wife for the slightest issue, and insulting nature makes me uncomfortable and triggers my own anger due to his blatant disrespect for just about everyone around him.

My mother-in-law says he’s worked on things, but it’s been 10 years of this and I’m not sure I want such behavior around my wife and our kids since we’re trying to conceive soon (cont).

A girl (she’s 22/23) in my condo is showing keen interest in me. I’m 31M, single and feel this will be a disaster to proceed with. It’s not like that I hate her or something. I just never thought about her.

Also just recovered from a bad breakup after 7+ years of relationship.

In a pickle here. I love dogs and SO not so much. However, we’ve been dog sitting this 8 month old pupper for one day every week since the last 2-3 weeks and it has completely converted my wife into a dog lover. I’m emotionally attached to this dog but very quickly realized this is very temporary. Plus, I don’t think either of us are ready to get a dog full time - I am assuming there will be a lot of work around it. Any suggestions on how to not get so attached with this cute lil one?

Looking for some perspective: we just got a brand new $2,000 glass top 78" dining table. I asked my husband to please use a table cloth when he uses that table for d&d with his friends to avoid scratches and the loud dice on the table. He got upset that I "don't let him enjoy our stuff," that I "hate the sound of him having fun," and he says I am being unreasonable. From my perspective, I just want to preserve this expensive piece of furniture that we both love. Am I being unreasonable?
