I met with one that a friend connected me to but didn’t pay as it was a trial run.
The approach he took to career was similar to what a life coach would be in life. (Lots of positive self talk, setting (in my opinion-outrageous) goals like “write down 200 companies you want to work for and then find a connection at each of them” and then when I questioned it he was like “how much do you want to progress your career?”
It’s wasn’t really my thing so it would not be something I’d be interested in paying for. But I recognize that it works for some people! I’m sure different coaches have different approaches and you just need to find one that works for you.
What are you trying to get out of a career coach?
A mentor or sponsor within your company may be more familiar with and effective at navigating internal politics. For example, part of navigating politics is knowing which people have influence or power. A coach that doesn’t work at your firm can only guide you so far in determining who that is, vs a mentor who has direct experience with who the power players are.
The way I see it, career coaches are worth it if you take into consoderation the ROI you could potentially receive. They would be able to steer you into your next life-changing move and forge the correct path for you to take.
I'd say you can get more of a bang for your buck than just stixking to your own decisions. Most of the time, there are many things you fail to take into consideration which is where an outsider's persepctive would come in handy. It's definitely and investment, but it's so worth it.
Oh absolutely. I don't even realize how much hiring one helped me. I never would have imagined seeing myself where I'm currently at in my career if it weren't for my career coach.
I used to have one when I was at my lowest. I could say that getting a career coach helped me in a way. But I realized that it would still depend on you on how you want your career to continue.
I’m side gigging as a career coach. Happy to do a free intro session as I’m working on getting my accreditation. DM me if interested
