Does anyone use novel studies in their classroom? If so, how do you like it?

It can be a nice and different break for them. Gets them excited.

Thanks! Changing it up can always be a good thing, especially when keeping the attention of 10 and 11 year olds!

Have you seen Rules by Lord...

I use them as breaks between units and at the end of the year. My kids are excited to read the books and then see a movie adaptation if there is one. I usually get my resources from TPT. Having it digitally allows me to tailor it to fit my kids. When I taught 5-8 it was all novel studies and I loved it.

Thanks! I like the idea of using it between units!

I used to use them at the end of the year to review standards. This year admin wants me to use them to teach the standards. So, I will be doing that

I believe they work well! I'm not sure what book you're using, but we'll be reading Anne Frank and I have Comprehension questions with vocabulary if you're interested in them!

I teach 5-7. When I first started teaching I taught 6-8 and 12. It’s a small rural school PK-12 with about 255 students. There is one class per grade. I had 17, 24, and 22 students in my classes

Always! Helped me to provide a variety of reading levels in a student friendly way...What grade do you teach..I've spent my life as an aspiring children's novel writer reading them ALL!!!

I teach the 5th grade!!!

Love using novels towards the end of the year. I had success with “Because of Winn Dixie”, “Holes”, and “Island of the Blue Dolphins “.

I’ve used Holes, Because of Winn Dixie, and many others in 4th & 5th grade. The students loved reading and completing the unit activities. Novels worked best at year end when there are a lot of interruptions due to year end events.

I took advantage of Verizon’s Black Friday deals and got myself the new iPhone yesterday. I’m AMAZED by all the neat things it can do. One of my favorites is that you can grab text from a picture and have it read aloud. This would be so helpful for my students with vision needs and those with reading disabilities. When do we think we’ll actually see this technology in the classroom? Can’t very well put “iPhone” on a students assistive tech section of their IEP 😂

Our school has a very diverse population, but our district and building don’t embrace it very well, so I decided to start in my own classroom. I talked to my kids about family origins and then surprised them with a flag from each country of origin. Now when they walk in there is a small representation of who they are. It also sparks conversation about where the different flags are from and shows students just how diverse we all are. So far the kids love it and we’ve had some great conversations.

Random thought. Many teachers live and die by their whiteboards, and that means dry erase markers are essential classroom supplies. Far more expensive than the chalk I started with, but I digress. I feel like the only person on the planet who prefers bullet-tip markers to the standard chisel tip. I am particularly fond of the Pilot refillables, despite their limited colors. Anyone else care to share their marker thoughts on markers and the merits of chisel tips vs bullet?

Now that my school is completely in-person, I’m noticing that the students who were online last year are pushing back on everything we do in school. Following the most basic of rules, directions, or fun is a struggle. I teach 8th grade, but I coach in the high school. I’m seeing it across the board. Is anyone else seeing this too? Is your school or district addressing it with any preventative measures social-emotional supports?

If we have good, free healthcare through spouse’s job (military), is it still worth it to pay for a high deductible plan through my job to get the benefit of an HSA? For context, we are a family of three. The cost of the health care plan just for myself would be $20/paycheck every two weeks (or about $520/year). Cost to add husband or child to the plan is over $200/paycheck (so I know that’s not an option). My thought is it’s not worth it to pay for the plan, but is there another pt of view?

I think I’m falling for my mother in law. The feelings aren’t necessarily sexual in nature. They seem to be much deeper and emotional feelings—which I get would concern my wife more so than sexual feelings. It doesn’t help that everyone thinks my MIL finds me to be her “favorite” in addition to some other complicating nuances. Obviously, I won’t act on these feelings, but as the years go by, the closer we’re going to get since she’s around a lot and we talk quite often when we’re alone.
