Does anyone wonder how they know whether they are a good lawyer? I feel like i work on long drawn out cases where it will take years for the “victor” to emerge so it’s not clear whether I’m actually a good advocate or not.

All the damn time. I spend months (if not years) doing the legwork all for someone above me to snap a finger and seal the deal. With my arguments, my writing, my strategy. But their presentation and decision making. Drives me crazy and makes me doubt myself constantly.

Coincidentally, yesterday I saved a major issue when my boss went off the rails on a conference call. The outside party noticed and, on the side, let me know that they “saw” me. So I guess little moments like that let me know I’m on the right track?

Yes. Sounds like we are talking civil lit here, probably “complex commercial” which is another way of saying spending marathon. Its a money moving device, has little to do with advocacy. Anyone who thinks otherwise had drank the kool-aid. Securities lit here for context.

I think the determination of whether or not you’re a good lawyer depends on the satisfaction of your clients. If the clients are happy, then you’ll get more work, referrals and they’ll pay their bill on time and with less complaints about what’s been billed.

You can have a bad result but if explained early enough to the client that a bad result is a possibility then it’s easier for them to accept. Make them a partner in the litigation or contract negotiation. The more they feel involved the more they will trust you.

This is all general advice and I fully recognize that there are crazy clients who will always complain and bitch.
