Does certifications for design matter? Like for UX design?

Head of UX here -- we do look for training of some kind as well as a portfolio. UX is a pretty technical discipline, so when hiring we want to know you have an understanding of all the basic pillars, as well as can show your strategy/creativity/attention to detail in portfolio pieces. This doesn't mean you have to invest in an expensive and time consuming GA course though, there are other ways to learn/smaller certificates to get to understand the nuts and bolts.

like

I’ve never heard of UX as being pretty technical, though that depends on the target. If it’s web, no. App design gets a bit trickier but it’s still basic stuff.

If it’s the experience design of say a new embedded product (Mirror), an upcoming console (PS5), or the control systems of a Dragon capsule from SpaceX, I’d swing more in agreement.

Depends on where you get it from I guess. Somewhere like General Assembly would matter much more than getting verified with those LinkedIn assessments.

like

I think they’re really well known and credible too! I know a strat director who has gotten certified from them. To get a role as a UX designer you’d definitely need a portfolio to go along with it, going through the course would help you with that but regardless still great to have on your resume.

like

No. Unless you work on a place that needs a merit badge to prove you know your shit.

like

100% this fellow CDs. Most of the UX training and knowledge world is focused on production design work (such as Sketch). The Mechanical Artists of the modern world that don’t understand behavior, wireframes all day that break the moment someone with true design craft messes up their interaction design expectations, etc.

like

You don’t need a certificate if you can properly demonstrate those same skills and teachings within your portfolio projects.

like

In my experience, any kind of design cert (my degree is in Game Design) can help, but a portfolio and experience matters a lot more for UX.

IBM design thinking?

I have a Masters in UX, but I feel the barrier of entry into a UX role is pretty low. Large tech companies are hiring UX designers who have a degree in Political Science, but a certificate in UX.

Has anyone here been able to recover from career setbacks caused by Dot Com, 9-11, or Great Recession economy? Just turned 40 with 15 years of relevant industry experience, and my Big 4 employer brought me in at a level designed for 25 year-olds. Career progression is apparently based on time in role rather than performance, so I’ll have to spend 8 years climbing back to the level I was at pre-recession. Is there another way, or is my career stuck in neutral?

I’ve been approached my by company (software) that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

Would you rather try to get promoted/climb the career ladder or try and grow your side hustle into a larger enterprise while working your day job? I’m at a point where I’m very comfortable where I am and ready to move on to higher paying but more stressful roles. At the same time I’m also pursuing a side hustle that can be lucrative if done correctly but comes with more risks. Would you 1.) try and get promoted while pursuing a side hustle or 2.) stay in current role and focus on side hustle?
