I think it helps to concentrate! If used and disposed of properly, I think it’s a good thing.
It helps with concentration and anxiety!!
I used to chew gum to help with anxiety! It’s can be a valuable form of sensory input!
If it wouldn’t end up under my desks, I could get behind it. 🤢 I don’t bar it unless I hear it. I hate popping or smacking gum! 😡
Years ago I was told by another teacher that gum chewing will help my students concentrate during state testing. However, years later As I was taking a course dealing with validating scientific peer reviewed journals for my Master’s class, I came upon that very same gum chewing study that was funded by the “Gum” corporations and unfortunately was never replicated by other Scientists. However, if you believe it, then the placebo effect works for most students chewing on pretty much anything. Eating gummy bears, popcorn, skittles, starbursts. Find something that is not gross or creates a mess in your classroom.
Mints and gum help with focus and anxiety. Setting forth expectations is key
Wintergreen life savors help students stay focused. Scents help, and even the chewing/sucking can help. Doesn’t mean every student needs this, but it’s another strategy.
I’m on the fence about whether or not it actually helps them concentrate. But as long as I don’t find it under the desks or on the floor and they can keep from chewing “like a cow” I allow it. But as soon as they start chewing their cud with their mouth open they have to spit it out. Gross.
