Is it possible to make partner in big law with meeting billable hour requirements but not really going over those thresholds often? I ask because I’m in a place in my life where I have no issues working 1900/2000 hours a year, but I have no desire to do 2100-2300 or more. Does anyone who has pulled those hours think it was worth it from the perspective of that time spent away from your family or even just at the expense of your social life and spending time with your friends or on hobbies?

I traveled on Sunday (from noon onwards). Can I still claim 75% per diem (on travel day) if my manager paid for my dinner (only cost $7). I had an expensive lunch at the airport. I’m new to federal.

Got offered a cybersecurity analyst role at a hedge fund. Comp is 220k Currently at EY, SC in cyber LCOL city making 90k I’m not doing this just for the money but it’s really hard to say no. For anyone that has transitioned from a “small law” emergency-like trial practice to big law, do you ever feel that big law really overworks a problem/issue and sometimes at the expense of the client? I mean, anyone can answer regarding running up the bill, but I feel like a lot of the work I do doesn’t add value to resolving the case that is worth the bill. Is this just stark to me after working in small law and/or a flat fee practice?

Any advice on dealing with “will do” or “confirming receipt” culture? Recently lateraled and the new firm is obsessed with appearing super responsive, unfortunately at the expense of actually being able to sit still for 5 min without responding “will do” or telling someone I’ll “review and revert”. New job provides reimbursement for remote work equipment by item (eg $300 for monitor, $500 for desk, etc…). I already have a desk so I would prefer to reallocate that money to a better monitor setup or upgraded peripherals but they won’t let me flex the budget like that. What risk is there if I purchase a desk for $500, expense it, return it, then use that money towards the equipment I actually need?

When people debate whether or not to move back in with their parents to save on rent and what-not, do they just assume that their parents are happy to welcome them back to live in their homes rent- and expense-free? Seems a little presumptuous is all.
