Maybe not officially, but definitely unofficially
What if I'm not a child. An alumni hoping to get back into graduate school? Do you think donating something like a few grand a year would help?
Yes
It has to be substantial I thought, like >$10K..I doubt they'll view you favorbaly for giving $1000/year..
About how much annually as a baseline?
Depends on school (student/alum size, endowment size, academic standard) and the kid.
Donating $10M to Harvard for a kid with a 2.0 GPA won’t help. Donating $5k to a smaller state school with a kid right below their admission standard would probably help. Donating same amount to a school with similar standards but a huge alum base won’t work.
I’d also say it’s less about the amount and more about your name. Obv the money gets your name out there but if you are alum and get involved as well as write checks then that is most beneficial.
Very important caveat: this is mostly for private schools. A good portion of public colleges cannot look to see if the applicant is a legacy and cannot give any priority to legacies
D2 it’s been quite a while since my undergrad degree at a public university but I do specifically remember there being a spot on the application to list my father and grandfather as alumna so maybe they use it as a tie-breaker or something?
I know public universities can look at alumni status, I remember UVA saying it doesn’t help much in state but out of state alumni kids get moved into the in state bucket which makes it easier to get in. Just one data point but at the end of the day if you are donating enough to be someone the school cares about it I’d be surprised if it’s not a factor
