Yes. You will objectively get “in the door” at more places and more $ at other places you’d still have gotten into.
Are you seriously asking if getting a higher score on the only standardized part of the application for nearly all applicants matters?
Damn A1! Giving us all a bad name with the hostilities (ACN myself). I'm actually on the other side. I got a 780 but with an otherwise average resume and not looking for a career change, I was wondering if I need to go cure cancer in the next 6 months before applying lol.
730, accepted into Harvard and Wharton. I'm of the opinion GMAT is a checkmark and story gets you in, especially coming from consulting
I have a low UG GPA, so I’m definitely shooting for 750+ so that at least one of my stats can tilt a school’s averages in the right direction. Otherwise I would think a 730 is sufficient for most schools assuming the app/story/fit is there.
Wasn’t trying to be hostile, my apologies. If you got a 780 then first of all congrats that’s an incredible score! And if you work for Accenture I am sure your resume is strong too. Don’t worry about curing cancer. With that score and our name just get your story straight. Doesn’t have to be incredible - nearly nobody’s is - just has to make sense
Legit question - how does working for accenture makes your story/resume strong ? Nearly there are 100,00 people working for each big4 and Accenture, etc. I always thought working for smaller firms, startups makes a story more special than working for these firms.
BCG1, care to elaborate what differentiated you?
Fair question, but what I'm asking about is the relative value of a great score vs. a great story.
Ok, so I got a 740. I stand by what I said above. I got interviews everywhere by Harvard and Stanford. I can only compare subjectively to my peers and coworkers but the trend I identified I think is true. I would agree that 730 is good enough for almost anywhere. 780 will probably get you an interview even at even more places. Of course, people with lower scores get interviews at places I didn’t so the story matters a lot too.
If you already have a 730 and are asking if you should try to get a higher score or prioritize your apps and refine your story I’d go with option B. If you’re just asking if 780 is viewed more favorably than 730, that’s a silly question, of course higher is better
I think the name speaks to the global reputation. A boutique could allow you to do a lot more interesting stuff, but you would really have to spell out what you do and what you accomplished.
The important part is how you position your story not who you work for... the difference being in that if you come from a brand name and can position your story properly you probably are a step beyond the person with a similar story in a no name company.
How was the harvard interview?
sooo repeating this whole question for a 710. In your opinion is there a material difference between 710 and 730?
Way I see it, I’m smack dab in line at a point where doors aren’t closed. Debating taking it again closer to applying vs committing to the score and focusing on my story
A2 710 is not the average for M7...
@A1 Work experiences that are unique even at BCG (international projects, leave of absence to work at client). I focused my essay on things I love outside of work / impact on me, and had my recommenders prove more of the business skill set
@A2 intense but you're just talking about why you made the decisions you did, and about the work you do every day so nothing to extensively prepare for
