Does higher vault ranking (v10-30 compared to v80-100) open more doors for corporate in-house opportunities for a senior associate? If chambers practice area rankings and expected billable hours are similar and they offer the same DPW pay scale, does it matter less? Is it better to stay at/lateral to a firm where you might be able last longer to learn the necessary skills? Any personal anecdote or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

This is going to be entirely context dependent. If you want to go in house at FAANG (or at any notable tech company or startup), then doing tech trans at Gunderson or Fenwick is going to prep you way more for those positions than just cranking through a V10 NY pubco M&A practice. If you want to do in house finance work at a bank or a distressed company shop then those same V10s in NY have top shelf finance/restructuring practices. Then we get into geographical preference — do you want to be in CA (of which the market preference will change your choice of practice drastically; way more tech in SF, no entertainment work outside of LA, SD is beautiful but a chiefly biotech/defense/Qualcomm town), NY, TX, etc.

Thanks. FAANG won’t be feasible at least in the immediate future for me given my work experience and currently available options. Sounds like a firm’s specific practice area reputation matters more than the general vault ranking which might overlap at times.

My 2 cents - contacts with the hiring peraon in legal and execs count much more. So does your years out and relevant experience. I could train people and i already have to train them on how our forms risk tolerance and co depts work. So big law didnt impress me much there.

My work just had a retreat and I felt so out of place and uncomfortable. I tried to talk to people but was pretty much ignored and honestly it was really stressful for me, and the reason I chose a remote role was to avoid this.

Now we have yet another one with triple the amount of people, a 12-hour flight away. I have to be with them for 2 days straight and would have to room with someone I don’t know.

How do I not attend this and not seem like I’m not a “team player”?

Midlevel associate here. Was looking to lateral into a certain group, got hired, and then found out I got hired into a different group (I know 😖). I’m not hating it but it’s not what I signed up for. There’s a possibility I can get my foot in to actually switch to the right group but I’d have to take a class cut - down to a 1st year. Worth the $$$ cut (and do what I actually thought I wanted) or just stick it out where I got placed?

Controversial opinion: if a firm has a billable requirement of 1800 hours or more, it shouldn’t be able to advertise the job as having any paid time off. It’s not PTO, you literally just have to make up those hours somewhere else, like nights weekends and holidays. You’re not “off”, because ultimately you’re still working the equivalent of a full week every week for the entire year.
