Does it bother you that the job market is so faddish? When I left college (pre-crisis) most wanted to work for a bank or MBB. Now all I hear about is FANG (but mostly G) and startups.

Well, consulting sucks. We all knew that. But now everyone knows that.

I guess what bothers me is that people (including me) subvert their own inherent preferences to chase trends and end up less happy. Worse those trends are mostly manufactured by effective recruiting and talent marketing departments.

I actually really like consulting...

When I left college a little over 2 years ago (went to an Ivy, was formerly in consulting), MBB and consulting in general, as well as finance, were still the most attractive options. Think FANG is an attractive exit op after a few years in the aforementioned sectors, but it’s not as if a majority of folks are saying “I’m recruiting FANG first, then seeing if finance / consulting works out.”

I hear consulting is still the most popular career option for people from Ivies who don’t know what they want to do. Not much as changed tbh

Thanks G1: that’s helpful. I suppose my perspective has just changed over the years.

I was also pre-crisis OP. Didn’t have strong preferences and kind of went with the flow. FANG does seem more exciting now, if I could have seen the future I’d have done things differently. What would you have gone into if you hadn’t been seduced by consulting?

I don't think it is crazy to want to be at Google, MSFT or Amazon. I'm less enamoured but the others as I don't think their competitive moat is nearly as strong. The job market follows fads because people follow money and excitement. Nothing wrong with that.

It’s only natural. Who would want to work in finance without fat bonuses?

Love it! More money than consulting and better perks! You don’t need a per diem when everything is free 👍🏻

Is consulting as advertised when it comes to career acceleration? Personally, I am starting to doubt it. It feels like the skill sets are a bit dated and the world has moved on. Also, we get put on so many random engagements it’s hard to build tangible skills. I am talking big 4, MBB is a different game.

Just a shout-out to all the LGBTQ+ consultants who are not in heteronormative relationships. Every time I read threads here wherein folks assume that someone posting about a wife or girlfriend is a man, or someone with a husband is a woman, I feel invisible. This also happens to me at work - colleagues and clients incorrectly assume the gender of my spouse.
