It depends! You’ll see some senior mgrs with crazy hours but others are honestly just cruising through. It is what you make of it. I think the sweet spot is to give just few enough fucks that the work doesn’t consume your life, but still be good enough at your job to bring in a consistent $150k+. Dream job for me would be chill senior manager (no partner track), but unfortunately I married wealthy and will probably retire soon and bear spoiled babies.
One thing that PA has really taught me is that money isn’t everything. You can make $1million per year but if your job consumes 95% of your time, you will never be happy unless, of course you love PA and make a choice to devote your life to it. Otherwise, you can get out when the time is right and live a healthy lifestyle with a happy family...
EY4- Your SO have a single brother?
EY2, I don’t want to get used to it. Not ready to give up 99% of my life to PA.
It never gets better, it gets different....No wait it just gets worse.
Most SMs have awful work life balance because they are trying to make partner. For the ones who aren’t, it’s not that bad or that many hours. I work far less hours than a staff. I do have a lot more stress, though
I wonder this all the time
It's not worth it. Unless you are definitely on the partner track, get out at manager level. Staying too long is a big mistake..... I have learned that the hard way....
I log in a 8, log out at 5, bill 8 hours. What's the big deal? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Being so close to senior and certification I would highly recommend hanging in there if you can. It will be worth it when you leave. Someone told me a long long time ago to take deep breaths and realize no one is going to die if they don't get their financials the exact minute they want them. Try and put things in perspective and realize we are almost done with February already. Try hanging on for a little longer - good luck!
Even for $200k/year, the lifestyle that SM’s (appear to) have hardly seems worth it
Hours won’t change but you’ll get used to it
You will also get paid for it too. My Sr managers are making 200k plus a year.
SM here- the pay is not nearly what is posted above and the hours are horrid (they used to be good for SMs). My first thought with the title was “this was NOT worth it”.
AM1, that’s what I thought!
Some of the discussions the partners and directors have in the client conference room, I wonder if I’ll ever be as knowledgeable 😑 granted I’m only a 2nd year Staff
What you see isn’t always reality. Take a risk and ask one of your managers or senior managers what their day to day is really like.
SM2,I don’t think I can endure this atmosphere till manager.
Totally depends what you’re looking for. I can say I’m in low COL and don’t make anywhere near 200k. However, I’ve proven myself so the partners trust me and therefore I do pretty much whatever. Wfh, come in whenever, leave whenever. I can’t give up that flexibility and I’ve got my eye on that partner paycheck. That being said, the stress is real. If it’s not your long term thing though, definitely wouldn’t stick it out as long as I have. And agreed with sm2. No one is going to die if they don’t get things the minute they want them and definitely don’t leave before senior. Need to do at least a year as a senior to make your time in PA worth it.
Senior managers make good money. But money is not important to everyone. Personally I would rather have a 9 to 5 job and make 115k in high col area vs 175k working 1700 chargeable hours plus another 300 admin hours. Plus eating another god knows how many hours to make budgets look nice.
