Does Kearney have a much faster promotion cycle than most consulting firms? Why am I seeing Managers with barely 4-5 years of experience? Would like to see what the promotion timeline looks like if anyone can share!

Bc the expectation is not expertise it’s getting really good at logic-based, structured problem solving. If you need more than 3 years for that when our engagements are 4-6 weeks, then 8/10 times long term career in consulting isn’t for you. The quick push to grow and develop is also a great testing ground for who can become a partner and push the firm to grow and develop at rapid pace. Expertise is developed and built usually at EM level and beyond.

That’s the standard timing for any consulting firm isn’t it? I was at MBB and it was standard there, I’m now at B4 and it’s standard in the consulting parts of here...?

Hmmm... Considering Managers are 2 steps below Partner (Manager, Principal, MD/Partner), I thought it was much faster than usual to be at Manager before hitting 5 years. Entry level analysts (right out of college) would be 2 years, and perhaps another 1-2 years in between before reaching MBA-level, followed by another 2 years at MBA-level to finally get to Manager was my assumption for most consulting firms

Since I don’t see any Kearney folks on here I’ll provide my quick 2 cents. The minimum time at a certain level prior to promotion at each level up to manager BA - 1 year SBA - 6 months Associate - 1.5 years So yes, our youngest managers are around 25 if they started right out of UG at ~22

To principal is basically 3 years or out now for the most part. Partner can take longer

Takes about 8 years to hit manager at ZS if you're an average performer... 6 would be really fast (2.5 years at associate, 2.5 years at AC, and 3 years at consultant is the norm)

like

We're definitely on the slow side. The pro is no up-or-out model, so ZS offers more flexibility in balancing work and life

Perhaps true, but I have also heard that ATK has a track record of counselling out people after one or two projects so the promotion timeline is not everything

helpful

2-3 at BTA, 2 at C, 2-3 at SC and then M. 4-5 is fast without an advanced degree

Actually some MBAs come in at C if they’re like a target SCNO school. But no idea, this place is becoming incredibly toxic also.

Just to add, the Managers I’m seeing are not even 4 years at the job (more like 3-4 years)... so now I’m even more curious how Kearney’s timeline work! Is it actually really just 3 years combine at Analyst and Associate level? Not saying it’s bad at all.. instead, I want to see my firm do this expedited timeline

I’m at a B4 now, and in my piece of it we promote on an MBB-like timeline

funny

Agreed it might vary by firm. Our on time to manager from undergrad is 5-6 years, with fast performers getting there in 4.5-5 years.

Manager 1. Transfer from audit into FDD (and have to do one more busy season in audit), or leave to a financial reporting job at a large public co for 40% raise?

The belief that you should be able to move from HCOL to LCOL and not have to take a pay cut is ultimate in socioeconomic and geographic privilege and outright entitlement. Nobody is going to give LCOL a raise to move to HCOL. The work you do is the same, you produce the same value, bill the same rate as peers in another geography. Take a pay cut or give LCOL a significant raise.
