It’s safe. I’ve lived there for six years. Especially if you’re close to the metro it’s fine. There are homeless people around, but I’ve never felt threatened. There are also tons of young professionals always walking the streets.
It felt totally fine last year, but I have been gone since November so I can’t say. It’s not packed though. But again, if you’re staying within a couple blocks of the metro there is a grocery store there that’s open I think 24/7 or until very late, and several big apartment buildings, so people are always around. Especially now in the spring/summer that more folks are out due to nice weather. Agreed with others though that if you want more certainty you can go with Logan or DuPont etc. The main benefit is that NoMa will be cheaper and/or newer/nicer accommodation
Agreed with the above- it’s overall very safe but i probably wouldn’t pick that as my top place for parents to stay who aren’t used to cities. I’d stick to DuPont, Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, West End, and Kalorama/AdMo. Capitol Hill would also probably be lovely for them too.
I agree on all of this. Especially Capitol Hill (might be cheaper than Gtown and Dupont). I think kalorama/Admo might not be parent friendly unless you know the street is more residential and away from the bar scene.
The only areas that have really really thinned out are directly downtown near city center and mvt (imo) Logan/Shaw/etc. Are still pretty lively
It’s fine but if I was visiting DC I would try to stay more in DuPont/Logan Circle area
I live in NoMa and would def stay somewhere else if I were just visiting
Yep, I live in Penn Quarter and it’s definitely thinned out. I get chased after or yelled at, and pass a few people going to the bathroom or touching themselves in a 5 block radius. Just telling it like it is
I’m Asian and was racially harassed there two weeks ago. I’ll still visit noma, but I wouldn’t stay there. Second DuPont/Logan
Thank you, and sorry about your experience 😪
I’d stay closer to Logan circle but I’m pretty risk averse
Penn quarter and Chinatown are fine safety-wise but not a nice place to stay because they’re totally dead right now - not that your parents want to go out, but it’s just kind of depressing. Stay in dupont, Logan, Capitol Hill or Georgetown if you want to stay in a nice area!
Awesome thanks all! Looking at Dupont and Georgetown now.
NoMa is good
