Does pre-presentation anxiety go away the more senior you get? I'm better than i used to be, but as an introvert, it's the worst part of the job.

You can take a class, like toastmasters, improv, or stand up comedy. Those all help a TON. But one immediate thing you can do is know your material backwards and forwards. Im not talking about memorizing a deck, but truly understanding the reasoning for everything you’re presenting inside and out In my experience, that didn’t kill the pre-presentation jitters, but it makes them instantly go away the second you begin presenting. Because there is no more uncertainty — you know what you are presenting backward and forward.

Yep, it does. No secret tricks as far as I know. Just practice and experience.

Propranolol changed my life. I had horrible public speaking anxiety and nothing I tried (classes, breathing exercises, etc.) really made it better. My psychiatrist prescribed beta blockers and now I feel invincible. The best part is I don’t need to take it every time I present anymore. After the first few times, I felt more confident and less anxious going into presentations even without the medication (I think just seeing myself finally get through a presentation without shaking/hyperventilating was enough to make me less fearful. Sometimes I even enjoy presenting now). Definitely keep doing what you’re doing because it sounds like you’re getting better with time and experience, but just wanted to put this out there as another option for anyone who’s struggling.

It never really goes away, but know that many people of all ages feel the same way, even power C-Suites into their 40s. Everyone is different and it is more common than you think.
That brings me comfort. Everyone is pretending they’re ok but they’re not.
You can definitely reduce the anxiety with practice.

I once heard for every minute presenting, spend 10 minutes rehearsing. I personally spend 20 or 30. We’re all different and that’s normal.

Once great piece of advice though: don’t forget to look like you’re having fun. People won’t remember what you said, they’ll remember how you made them feel. Only 7% of communication is verbal, the rest is body language!

I did improv as suggested above, and my god did it help. Toastmasters was good too, but too formal for my taste.

The first improv class I went to had me shaking of nervousness. Now, a year later, I perform for a paying audience once or twice a month. ✌🏻

@CD1 - Mental fogginess and an inability to concentrate is what causes me to become anxious because i can no longer keep my thoughts together. On Friday, I could present the work no problem because i knew the work inside out. Today, after the weekend, i can barely connect the dots. I must need to exercise or something.

like

Like any fear, it never "goes away."

But it gets better with practice. A lot better. Keep practicing. You got this! 💪

20 years in, I still get nervous. Most of the time it’s fine but every now and then it isn’t, just to remind me why I get nervous in the first place.

like

It mostly goes away. Early in my career, I was so introverted, I would let others go up to accept awards (and there’s no speaking involved in most of this) for me.

I’m still an introvert - and I always feel some anxiety before presenting. But now, I’ve gotten up on stage at live-storytelling events and presented at LEICA Store Miami and, to be honest with you, I’ve come to enjoy it.

But I completely agree with CD1: the better prepared you are, the better you’ll feel.

like

I used to get anxious about having to talk to clients over the phone. As others have said, practice practice practice. Early on you can practice with your peers, roommates, or significant other. Record yourself and listen to it (this was excruciating for me). Acting classes are another option as well. Also remember that you’re a subject matter expert on what you’re presenting, as you created it

like

Don’t say “I am an introvert.”

That’s damaging yourself.

Everyone has those tendencies, very few people are natural presenters. Everyone works to get better. You’ll work too, and you’ll get better.

There’s no magic switch. Get through good ones and bad. You’ll learn time never stops. You’ll find pockets that can be fun. We’re paid to type and click. Never forget that.

On prep work. Speaking is very similar to our presentations.

“Public speaking can be a nerve-racking experience, and even the most experience speakers feel stressed before going on stage, In fact I have a few friends who are literally nervous wrecks in the run up to their talks, wondering why they put themselves through the stress, and swearing that they’ll never speak again. Yet the moment thay step on stage something changes, and as an audience member you’d never know the stress they were going through back stage."

@cw3 Can you explain why you think that is damaging?

I used to throw up before every presentation and that was in ad school. At my last job, what I’d do is write down the idea names on index cards and the idea explanation on the back and make sure I could explain the idea while standing up in front of a mirror no matter what order the ideas occurred in. Every presentation, my boss would say my partner and I did better than the last

like

I used to be absolutely petrified and had completely frozen up in a few meetings early in my career. Then I did it - a lot. Now I actually enjoy presenting, which is something I never in a million years thought I would say. Just keep doing it - it gets better.

I re-contextualized it as adrenaline and take it as a positive. The more time you spend on stage tap dancing, the easier it is to deal with curve balls, but as long as you know the work in your bones and start building rapport as soon as possible you’ll be fine.

I gave a 20 minute speech last week. Did 20 hours of prep.

Hi y’all,
I shared an intermediate workout program (Back/Legs/Arms&Shoulders/Leg/Chest split) with a few friends the other day and figured I could also share it with others if interested.

It’s a program I follow outside of my 12-16 training block preps, and if anyone wants, I can share it with them. It’s for strength training.

Also happy to explain what any of the exercises are if someone wants the workouts and doesn’t know the benefit or how to do them.

Feel free to DM me about it

I just went through a rough time dealing with depression, PTSD, and anxiety. I didn’t seek help earlier because I didn’t want to appear weak or less capable than my male counterparts. If you’re struggling with stress at work, let me tell you: your mental health is more valuable! Reach out and talk to someone. It can save your life.
