I am currently getting a Master's of Library and Information Sciences, teaches information technology but it doesn't specialize in it. I am interested in working in UX Design. I have a BA in Psychology. Would it be beneficial to get into one of those UX boot camps to create a portfolio or do I just do one and begin to apply for entry UX roles? Thank you 🙏🏼

It matters a lot for your first job, arguably more than anything else. For SWE roles there is some more leeway but it’s still an important factor in getting an interview. GT is going to open opportunities other schools would not
Thanks Associate! By first job do you mean it would be a key factor in landing a job at one of these companies? I’ve also been adjusting to being out of state so my gpa is not ideal. Any thoughts?
Thank you so much for your time and detailed response! This helps so much
School matters but not an end all be all. I’ve went to a undergrad with bio degree in a non-ivy league (lesser known school). I’ve ended up as a Program Manager at AMD and recently got an offer at Amazon. The way you navigate your career is the most important factor in my opinion. Here are some things you should consider doing:
- frequently going to networking/job events
- doing things relevant to your career path (in this case for you bunch of LC, doing small projects and publishing it on GitHub, few extracurricular activities, and internship. I want to stress that internship is a best gateway to getting a job at a faang company)
- focus on mental health improvement by doing things you enjoy doing. This will help add positivity to your career outlook.
The single most important thing in your undergraduate career are your internships, they will outweigh any GPA or school name. Hyper focus on getting a good internship
Thanks Kearney! That’s what my family had been saying, and it’s great to hear.
It does sometimes. It really depends on the company. Some places only hire Ivy-leaguers.
Thanks Managing Director! does GT count as a Ivy league?
Ivy League means the Ivy League https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_League
