Most employers perform background checks before hiring. Employers also do periodic checks of current employees.
How long it takes depends on which system they use and how quickly they can confirm the information you entered. Mine have always taken at least a week.
I guess technically before. Moved around at a few agencies and when they send over the offer letter there’s a background check authorization form in there. If you accept the job offer and sign the authorization then I assume you’d tell your current employer you’re leaving within a day or so of signing. So when the background check people reach out to verify employment your employer should in theory already know and it wouldn’t be weird.
I’ve been hired at two agencies and both required a background check.
CMI Media Group requires a background check and a drug test. The Publicis agency I work for now only required a background check. Both used the HireRight system.
