Yes, for people in the same jobs. It’s been proven that men are more likely to negotiate, be firm on wanting xxx, while women may not be as bold. Even new hires in my cohort, there was a woman with the exact same background as me (more experience even), same degree, making 10k less than me. I think it’s greatly improved in the past years, but it’s certainly not a “myth”. A lot of companies with the cohort model (like PWC), help fight this

@KPMG1 I’m pretty sure they weren’t “girls”, but actual grown-up women

The fish bowl community is entirely made up of individuals that are working; therefore we completely miss having any representation from people that choose to stay home and only a small representation of those who work part time after having kids. I would love if my wife (former Big4) still worked after having kids, but it’s not what she wanted to do. We all know the extra $100k/year would be huge! Instead she’d rather work very limited hours at the kids school which pays nothing compare to her market worth. And there is nothing wrong with her making that decision. But it is another example of what causes a wage gap between men and women. It wasn’t societies expectation of her or family pressure that made my wife make this decisions. It was what she wanted! Are there real drivers that cause the wage gap that need to be fix? Absolutely. Will there for the foreseeable future continue to be a wage gap based on choices a women makes (that should be supported) that also drive the wage gap? Absolutely.

For people in actually the same jobs, no not really. Are women in general systematically pushed into lower paying jobs/industries? Yes absolutely

As a male, I can tell you that it exists. Women, specially women of color, are paid significantly less for a number of reasons.

EY2 - look it up. And I mean real economic research. There’s math that skewed left and right, but objective numbers show that there is one. Not as large as some claim, but not as small as others do.

The data literally says it exists so no question there. Our firm pays the same across the board which is great for pay equality.

C2, can you explain?

God almighty, this place is democratic underground

When you control for a lot of factors (tenure, same job, etc), the gap is still there but small. Single digit %. The bigger problem is the explainable factors eg time out of the workforce (ie parental leave) is “punished” more than just day for day tenure. And as K1 mentioned, women are systematically pushed into lower paying jobs (toxic culture, gendered society expectations, etc)

I wish the argument was framed this way rather than the .75 on the dollar earnings. Could address the root cause of issues

In consulting? Yes and no. Salaries are more or less set once you get in. I've seen promotions 98% due to merit irrespective of race or gender. Unfortunately, women usually get steered into non STEM and non business degrees which are the highest earning fields. This problem is even more pronounced in minorities. If you're not even at the restaurant you can't have a seat at the table

The gender pay gap is not an issue of opinion.

like

M1, I have had the opposite experience. Women of color making more.

like

No, when you compare the salary of married men to women with no kids in the same position it is quite comparable. The difference is an opportunity cost to a woman’s career when they have kids and are forced to leave the workforce or take time away from their career when children are young. Is it fair? I’m not sure. It sucks for many women but it is also a great opportunity to spend time with family that many men never get to experience.

like

Also pay is not just dollars, just reference the maternity/paternity leave discrepancy described above. We need to work to provide men and woman equal opportunities

like

This isn’t an opinion poll. It exists

I'm a woman with a good paycheck. i don't agree that there is any gender gap when it comes to compensation. However i do want to point out that many of my girlfriends are not assertive enough to ask for that promotion or a higher income, also at times they don't want additional responsibilities, for family reasons. I firmly believe you get what you ask for, women have to be more assertive, success is not handed out on a platter.

At their specific organization and they immediately adjusted I believe. I appreciated their transparency on that front

As a former compensation professional, yes. Is there also a lot that is explained using rational economic analysis, also yes. It still exists though

This isn’t a pay gap difference. There is a small difference there. It’s the variation in advancement and promotion opportunities skewing the real numbers. Get more female leaders and it will quickly even out. Challenge is how to get past the straight white middle aged dominated group of managers directors and vp level

like

leadership is offered, it's earned. Women/ Men who are capable will make it on their own. Saying it as a woman

It’s been proven that men tend to ask for raises more than women. This one factor alone is contributing to the gap, along with many others.

like

Yes. I negotiated a higher salary and while waiting for the offer letter was told I needed to lower the salary 15k in order to get the offer through upper management.

I am looking to gain certification or other credentialing in diversity and inclusion, not only because it would look good on my resume both for future job-search purposes and also to become better educated in this area, which is growing in importance. I looked at SHRM's "Inclusive Workplace Culture Specialty Credential" and got a bit of "sticker shock" at the cost - $1,655.00 for members. Does anyone have other suggestions on training/credentialing in this area?

So I typically don’t answer the EEO questions at the end of applications that ask for race and gender. Lately I’ve noticed companies following up via email for this information after I submit the application. Am I the only one who does this? Does it even matter? Any thoughts on the follow up emails asking for the information after the application has already been submitted?
