I am finding the latest batches of grads are either superstars or need full time babysitting and nobody has time for the latter in a work environment so you need to demonstrate you fall into the former camp
Yeah it matters a little. Not a lot, but definitely a little. What does matter is how well you are able to communicate what you are capable of doing. You don't need to be a 'superstar" as old mate has said above. I'll be dead honest with you - as a grad you don't know anything. Your knowledge is so baseline that it is the pure definition of entry level. You would hope that the person doing the hiring is competent enough to understand this.
What I look for in grads when we do look at hiring is firstly a baseline understanding of tech (I work in software/firmware/electronic device manufacturing), and even more importantly an eagerness to learn and an interest in the career you are interviewing for. You can be the smartest lil cookie in the entire jar, but man if you don't like the job you are doing you are going to underperform. I have found more success hiring people who may not know everything, but want to learn because they are driven and want to work. The byproduct of this is that the person learns what they need and fills their gaps in, and becomes a great efficient worker.
so tl;dr: be clear in your resume, know what you are talking about, and show you are eager to learn.
Skills and Experience matters - they alone outweigh the university name.
