Does watching TV with a 5 month old negatively impact them?

No idea. But it positively impacted me so I did it. Happy mama is a positive thing for a 5 month old. No regrets.

I love this response so much. Let’s normalize prioritizing things that have positive impacts on us as moms too.

I mean, maybe. But I watched a ton of tv (like an embarrassing amount I’m ashamed to quantify) while nursing both my kiddos and they’re both pretty great (minus normal kid turd-ness from time to time). Do what you’ve got to do to survive mama!

I don’t know. My just-turned two year old watches waaaaaaay more TV (all kids songs and Mickey Mouse) than he should be according to experts. But, he counts to twenty (and actually counts objects, not just rote memorization) knows all of his colors and numbers, sings tons of songs, talks in full sentences, recognizes most of his letters and can sing the alphabet, knows his shapes. He knows all of his body parts, knows directional terms like up and down and forward and backwards. He also has excellent fine and gross motor skills. We don’t plop him in front of the tv, but it’s always on while he plays and he listens and learns from it and we do interact with him, too. But, would experts recommend this? No. Has it negatively affected my son? I hardly think so - if anything, it has helped him immensely because he truly enjoys it and learns that way. Every child is unique and different and has different needs. Use your own best judgment.

this is my son too, who also just tuned two in January ! The school allowed him to move up from the toddler class to the two's class (2 going on 3) because he's pretty advanced. He watched a fair amount of tv. i'm also proud of the tv shows he chooses - his current fave is classical baby, which I love too.

I let my son watch TV at that age because it gave me breathing time. He got really into educational shows, like Blaze and the Monster Machines, Bubble Guppies, Wild Kratts, etc. Now he's three years old and still does Noggin, ABC Mouse, Kiddopia, etc. He can do basic math problems. He knows almost all letter sounds. He is starting to learn reading. I'm sure that you can overdo it. And I wouldn't let a TV raise your kid obviously. But the content today can be super educational and fun for them. And it gives you a break.

There have been numerous studies that show any kind of screen time before age 2 can have lasting, negative impacts on brain function and development. You can do a Google search and find some very helpful resources and information that can help you make an informed decision on what is best for you and your baby. Congratulations on your new arrival!

Absolutely not. 5 month old is not even noticing.

like

Must be! My little one will focus for 10-15 min at a time, even at the ceiling 🤷🏻‍♀️

Another option is when you’re watching TV and the baby is awake in the room, just face him away from the screen whether they’re in a boppy, the baby bjorn bouncer, bouncer etc

I mean there’s a difference between watching TV while you are with your kid and sitting your kid in front of the TV. In reading Emily Oster’s crib sheet, lots of TV before three has been indicative of issues. Also, kids can’t learn from TV before two according to the research she reviewed. That being said, I watched my fair share of real housewives around my babies will feeding them in the middle of the night but I certainly wasn’t sitting them in front of the TV thinking they would be engaged.

like

I’m with you. Emily highlighted the nuances. I did not. I’d also argue that your child was learning more from you than the TV as you said you engaged with him while the program was on. I think sometimes we as parents need guidance and ideas of playing to learn and the educational TV helps remove that mental load of how to do that. Said another way, take credit where credit is due. It was you teaching hand clapping and the programs were just a guide.

My 4 month old loves Sesame Street. It’s ok. Like others said and made a good point, mamas need a break too. Also, I love when my baby just chills with me. Bonding time is so important. Experts provide good direction but each situation is different. Congrats on baby.

My baby was very colicky and sometimes this was the only thing that chilled him out. We watched Hey Bear Sensory videos on YouTube at 4 months so at least it made me feel a little better that it was sensory stimulation for him

I wouldn’t watch 8 hrs a day with them, but some here and there won’t kill them. Sometimes watching TV was nice cuddle time with my daughter. My personal goal was to not make TV a routine or something she has a right to watch whenever she wanted.

Idk but I’m pretty sure they put crack in cocomelon and if my baby is super cranky.. I put that on for a few (very annoying, long songs) and she calms down 🤷🏻‍♀️ Our parents did worse things with us and we came out fine 😂

I’m coming back to work from maternity leave soon. The daycares I’m on the waitlists for won’t have an opening for 2 more months after that. What do you think is the best set up for the 2 interim months without daycare? Hire a nanny to come to the house (convenient but SO expensive), or do a flex arrangement with reduced hours? I’m leaning towards the flex arrangement and either trying to work early in the day and then watching the baby while my husbands at work. Any thoughts or experiences?
