Does your blazer have to have a button and be buttoned up when you appear in court? Some of my blazers don’t have buttons.

Blazers you’d wear in court should have buttons. But you don’t need to button them up. But wouldn’t you usually wear a suit in court?

As a woman in NY state court, I basically never wear a suit unless it’s an oral argument, and most women I see are not in suits. Also no one will notice whether your blazer has buttons.

I would never wear a blazer in court, only a suit jacket.

I’ve worn blazers to court without buttons. Female, if it matters, and I suspect it does

I really think it depends on the court and, as others have noted, gender. I saw a guy get scolded for wearing khakis and a blue blazer in bankruptcy court (SDNY) (he said he was covering for a colleague at the last minute), and a woman wearing a jersey wrap dress without a jacket and certainly no pantyhose in the very same courtroom without a blink from the court. I’m a traditionalist (and a woman), and always wear a skirt suit with hose. Better safe than sorry.

Someone once told me when I was a summer associate to always keep a suit in my office just in case I had to rush to court as I got more senior. Very good advice. Saved me from looking unprofessional at least 5 times.

As a female practicing in Chicago (state court), I echo A1

After seeing how attorneys dress in the Daley Center I never worried about by outfit again lol.

In state court (Virginia), I generally wear dresses with blazers. Most of my blazers have buttons, but one has a hook. I never button them. In juvenile and domestic relations court, female attorneys frequently just wear dresses and sweaters.

I’d say a blazer in district court is ok. Probably more formal for jury trial and appeal arguments though. Akin to a suit rather than unbuttonable blazer

Who has a blazer with no buttons?

This gal ;) its a more fashion forward blazer with high neck line purchased from Loft.

This is such a basic question, but what’s the best way to give my two weeks and not have things be completely awkward at work? I’m leaving to do the same type of work, but at a firm that I worked for in law school and that I know has a much better culture. My boss has a tendency to be passive aggressive towards people that are leaving and given that my office is right next to hers I’m worried my last two weeks are going to be so uncomfortable. Suggestions/advice?
