Hi Everyone,
I just received an offer to work as an software sales representative (SDR) for IBMs Z systems. I'm coming as a sales engineer in the cloud security space. Can anyone advise me on whether Z systems are something worth going into? Also what do the growth opportunities look like at IBM? Is there opportunity for lateral movement onto other teams? Not too sure how I feel about working on mainframes (Z systems) but they keep pitching hybrid cloud to me. IBM

Lol, sharing room with a team mate is ridiculous
Yeah 🚩 in a company
Yes, at both Microsoft and Google, it happened many years ago - actually I experienced it twice.
One was when our team attending the Google IO in SFO, and team manager was trying to save money for the company, asking the whole team share room with a teammate (same sex, of course). It was not too bad, as we only go back to the hotel room for sleeping, as we were all busy at the conference all day, hardly see each other. I and my roommate joked about he didn't like my snoring and I didn't like his smelling ;-)
Another instance was when I was at MS, it was a totally different outcome: I was asked to attend an employee outing fun event, and I shared room with a marketing manager, and the guy went out party at one night and came back very late. I was already in sleep. He apparently drank too much, and came back drunk and vomited on the floor, and he then felt into sleep didn't even knowing it. I got up at night going to bathroom and almost slipped on the floor, and then noticed that it was covered by his vomit. I had to clean up the floor because it smell so bad. The morning after, the guys acted as if nothing happened the night before, and out of courtesy, I didn't tell him about it.
Today, this dude works for GE, so watch out, you GE employees out there! ;-)
Um, no. If they did, I'd refuse. No way.
Hell. No.
at my old job, yes but not at my new job
At my old company never on usual travel. Only during the company retreat. But we also have single room options and let people say who they wanted to room with.
New new company and all companies before my last, never shared.
At my old job we did, until there was an incident, then no more sharing.
At my current job we ask people who are happy to room together to room, and whoever desires privacy can get it.
incident 🥴
I did once, it was tolerable.
What? That is so weird to me. Why would they put you through that kind of awkward lodging?
This gave me whiplash because this is a thing?? I would never.
I really cannot imagine someone from SAP or any other company I used to work for asking me with a straight face to share a room with anyone.
If I had no choice but to do this I would pay out of pocket for my own room and immediately start polishing up my resume. What a massive red flag.
