Does your firm do anything for yearly work anniversaries? It’s obviously not a big deal but I made it to a year at a firm with high attrition (at least ten associates in our division alone have left in my time here) and have received no acknowledgement of this fact. Nor have I heard anything about a year review. I’d take an atta boy and pat on the back.

No. We are in the adult world now. Especially firms with a high number of employees. Can't expect to be celebrated for normal things.

Usually firms will conduct some form of yearly review to inform you about any compensation adjustments as well as a performance review. But if the firm is shedding associates and making no efforts to increase retention (assuming here) then they may not care about associate development as well. Have you simply asked for a review? But if you’re looking for a pat on the back, generally speaking, this isn’t the industry for you. Or, find a partner at the firm who cares about associate development to talk to.

Hell I’d take one from HR. But seriously, this post was 60% jest.

I do plan to ask for a review once I make sure my files are in top shape. A bit difficult with 75 but gotta do what I gotta do.

No this isn’t a thing

Some partners who are amazing and actually care about their employees do this for associates. The partners I work for take me out for dinner and drinks for every little thing, I love it so much

No, this isn’t a thing. Some firms will do a recognition for milestone anniversaries, think 5 years, 10 years, etc. and it may be announced at an office wide lunch, but that’s it (other than a yearly or periodic performance review in accordance with firm policies).

like

Your pat on the back is raise/bonus and, of course, more work.

My previous firm did recognition at 5 year intervals at the Christmas party. Due to COVID they omitted the “celebration” and did not give recognition I missed out on my 5 year anniversary. My current firm does Annual recognition with an email that goes out and a gift of some sort.

I don’t love the company’s culture so I’m going to keep looking but would it be worth leveraging the offer with my current org? I’ve only been there for 7 months

Looking for tips on how to manage attorney employees. How to ensure that they take me serious and not see me as an admin. I am an operations manager at a midsize firm. Although I’m in my thirties, I look very young and I get the sense that many tend to view me like their teenage daughter. I’ve found that having an authoritarian management style helps but it does not feel genuine.
