Like all other holiday, the firm is "closed," but that just means the staff won't be there. Basically all lawyers (except some partners vacationing) will be.

Had a bunch of great interviews with this tech startup and then the 6th with the CMO - who the job reports to. She was nice enough but not the warmest person - a bit late to the call, eating lunch during the call and asking very specific questions about what I knew about xyz and nothing at all personal. Went from feeling excited to a little nervous about moving forward. Am I bugging out?

I’d like to get modest appreciation gifts for some of the junior associates I work with (think bottle of wine, maybe chocolate), but some are in other offices. Any recommendations on how to do this, or should I just send them a gift card?

Hoping for some guidance. Junior associate here (3rd year). I’ve brought in 3 clients. Nothing major. ~ $500,000 in billings. I have an opportunity to lateral to a practice area I am very passionate about but my clients have active matters and therefore, likely wouldn’t come with me. Would I be stupid to leave my firm? Is half a mill in billings enough to even move the needle? The goal is to make partner. I’m worried that by leaving, I’d be giving up a real shot at partnership. Thank you!

Do you think our clients are aware of how little we train new associates and laterals? I can’t imagine they would be happy if they did. I also wonder whether it’s as bad compared to other industries as it seems. I can’t imagine a trucking company would hire someone who just got their drivers license to haul freight across the country and tell them to “figure it out” or “learn by doing”.

Anyone have advice for dealing with a difficult secretary? I am a first year and my secretary is at least 30 years older than me and works also for the managing partner. She is very non responsive and verges on rude in interactions with me despite the fact I very rarely ask anything from her (only help with a filing every now and then). I don’t want to stir the pot as a newbie but it’s tough when I feel like I can’t reliably ask her for help when needed. How can I professionally address this?

Do you have any tips for managing up? I’m a midlevel. Often times partners are sitting on the docs before they confirm sign off or provide comments. This is sometimes a problem when clients want to close asap (they send chasers, etc).

Corporate attorneys: how many of you like the substance of the work you do? If you do like it, what's the nature of your practice and what about it do you like?

To clarify, "substance" means what you do when you actually sit down at your computer and turn a document. I don't mean stuff like "I like working on important deals" or "I like working with smart people" or "I like the prestige." Curious how many actually like the nitty gritty work.

When a mid level works with a junior, should the junior send the final product to the partner or the mid level? I am a mid level now, but I started as a junior as part of a growing practice group. At the time, there weren’t many associates in our group, so I always worked with the partners directly. Now we have juniors in our group, but I’m not sure about certain process points (such as the e-mail question), so I appreciate thoughts on this!

Normal situation? I am a second year associate that lateraled to a hyper-specialized practice group a year ago. Since joining, I have only worked with one partner. The issue is my workload. Usually at least once a day I am stuck with no billable work, most often because I have just submitted something to the partner and she is reviewing. I am not on track to hit our hours target. The partner has not given any real negative feedback, just have anxieties about workload. Any advice?
