Does your firm have regular mandatory social events outside of work hours? Mine just started doing this and I hate it. I’m missing time with my family and just feels like more work. Is it weird to just want to go to work and do my job and go home? I already work all the time, now I need to hang out with my coworkers during my precious free time?

You can always find a new job.

I’m in the process of doing that.

We have quarterly social events, but they aren’t mandatory. All but one or two individuals usually come, though. We don’t make them long and usually close the firm a little early so that way everyone can still get home for family time.

That’s the way to be! I’d totally go once a quarter.

Mandatory and Fun are mutually exclusive.

Yeah, hard pass. If I’m not being paid, I won’t be there. I barely get to see my kid during the week as it is.

Try to find a job that allows you to work remotely if it’s possible for your position. Wish you the best on your new job hunt. In the meantime, try telling your boss that your attempt to find work life balance is being impacted by the new mandatory events and maybe they’ll understand and give you a pass.

Yes but I like them lol. And I genuinely like the people and the events make me feel connected.

@partner 1 - Did you ask your employees if the thing that would make them feel like a part of a team was “voluntary happy hour”? Maybe instead of social events built around drinking your associates would rather have time to spend exercising and becoming healthier, or God forbid, spending time with their spouses and family…you know…the very people they chose to spend their lives with? If I’m making a point at all it’s this: maybe employers/partners should just ask their employees what would make them feel most valued, rather than assuming that these “voluntary” happy hour events were going to be the best thing to achieve that aim.

I hate mandatory social events… at my previous firm they used to make me go to all social events…ugh

like

This is a thing?? Hope they pay for that time wow

like

Yeah we’re salaried

We have the same thing except ours is social events to attract private paying clients (vs the legal aid we always do). They say if you want private clients, go out and network on your own time.. 🙄

like

I’m so sorry you have to go through this. My firm is the exact same. Not only do they make it mandatory, it can affect compensation and the team will look at you differently if you don’t take part in the social events.

Personally, I hate going to them. It feels like you’re there smooching and begging for work and it feels so unprofessional. Plus, most of the people who attend these also don’t want to be there, so you just end up having a miserable time.

In house editors at agencies, do you ever get to do good, public facing work? Or does that always go to vendors?

If leaves are credited at the end of each month and CLs expire after the month of December, How do we avail the December's accrued CL ?

Also, my PLs will be less than 15 by the end of Dec 22, will they still be encashed? And in which month's salary they're credited? Is tax levied on them?

About a year ago I took a job closer to home (7.5miles). My previous position is about 50miles away, but I worked there for 11.5 years. I am really thinking about leaving and going back to my previous position. I absolutely HATE my job now. It gives me panic attacks thinking about it. I’ve had to change my anxiety meds and increase dose. Yes my old job is an hour away, but I was so much happier and less BS I had to deal with there. Do y’all think it’s a good idea to take a job with more commute?

So I got 2 offers, 1 at a well-known firm (that I previously worked at, not as an atty) that offered 80K plus full benefits (100% health coverage, PTO, sick days, discretionary bonus & 1800 billable req.) Their a little old school in their methods but I do see the younger gen. coming in to make changes. 2nd offer is at a newer firm however i’ve heard great things, and they offered 80k, unl. PTO, 1500 billable hours, bonus incentives qrtrly, & 50% health ins. WHY can’t I make a decision? HELP

I’m an associate at a boutique law firm working on complex litigation and regulatory matters. I’ve worked at the same firm as a summer associate and the last three years directly after graduation. I’m worried that I’m not getting enough “practical” experience. I haven’t taken a deposition, only attended two oral arguments, and tend to write parts of briefs or motions but never in their entirety. (Continued in comments)

Hi, everyone. Wondering if you can help me?… The Partner at my firm is asking me for a list of Plaintiff law firm conferences. I used to work for the Defense, so I know about all of those conferences but I’m really stumped as to how to find the Plaintiff side conferences. We mainly do class action and mass tort. Any advice for me as to how to find them? Know of any? Thank you so much!

I did not meet my billable budget. I’m a 1st year and around mid October realized I was going to have to bill 8-9 hours a day before the end of this month to meet my budget, and planned to. However, my dad passed mid October which caused me to take time off. I’m about 200 hours behind, though. My boss said not to worry about it as they are understanding about me needing to take time off, but I’m still worried that this looks really bad…

How much do you rely on your para? I’m in my 30s and pretty computer literate, I don’t dictate, I like doing research etc. I know other attorneys that have their paras do all their discovery, all their research, all their motions and I wonder how it’s possible to hit billables if someone else is doing the majority of your work? Seems crazy to me.

Drowning. Joined firm last summer, brought a decent little book, primarily litigation associate. I’ve been buried in numerous matters from my transferring clients and matters at my new, small-ish firm. I get consistently favorable results, im in the office all week, manage all my cases independently. After 6 months, just told billables are too low, turnaround time is too high, and theyre concerned about my fit. I feel like I’ve just been launched into a bunch of matters with little/no guidance.
