We have “unlimited vacation” aka the biggest scam ever invented because then you never feel like you can go on vacation.

likesmart

Exactly. So if I ever plan to quit I’ll take 2 weeks off before I give my notice

They say certain days called “optional days” roll over for us. I haven’t been able to get a straight answer on this and it’s very annoying. It’s like they’re purposefully evasive.

Unless you’re in Cali, there is no legal requirement to rollover vacation. Vacation rollover is a liability to the company in a billable environment, so most chose a “use it lose it” approach to vacation. Random thoughts...

Yea but there’s a max you can accumulate.

I take days off whenever I want to by blocking off my calendar and as long as I make my hours no one seems to care. We don’t have PTO.

I have our first vacation coming up since adopting a puppy and I’m feeling really nervous and sad. We found a wonderful couple who boards dogs and she will be with humans and other dogs 24/7, so I don’t think she will be lonely but I keep thinking what if she thinks we abandoned her? I just need some words of encouragement to not feel so bad. 😢

Is it bad etiquette to spend less than $50 on a gift? We have a firm holiday party where everyone picks a name and gets a gift for that person, and I don't have a super close relationship with the person that I picked. Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??
