Um, we get a 1% raise every contract negotiation (every two years). So in 14 years we will catch up to this years inflation if we're lucky. From edweek.org " ... when adjusted for inflation, the average teacher salary actually decreased by an estimated 3.9 percent over the last decade." https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/teacher-salaries-arent-keeping-up-with-inflation-see-how-your-state-compares/2022/04#:~:text=But%20when%20adjusted%20for%20inflation,salaries%20are%20adjusted%20for%20inflation.
I think I'm a little late to the game. But I love to make this comparison. My grandmother was a home economics teacher starting in 1960. Her yearly salary was $5000. As a first year teacher too.... The home that her and my grandfather purchased in the mid-60's had a 20% down payment of a little over $5000. Their home now is worth over $700,000. I always think that if my yearly gross salary had increased and was comparable to what they were able to buy and use that money for I would be making a salary somewhere around $140,000. Again I know a lot goes into this and the problem of our pay, but thinking about the fact that if I had been a teacher years ago I could have supported myself and even a family with my salary alone is baffling. It will probably be the reason I eventually leave.
Hahahahaha!
No. >:(
Especially in the Biden era. There's no local education association that could keep up with the inflation his administration has wrought on all of us.
You can’t compare salaries. You have to compare standard of living. My daughter-in-law teaches in another state. She makes almost as much as me as a third year teacher and I have taught over twenty years. They can’t afford a home and have a very small apartment. We have a better standard of living with my much lower salary. She will pass me in salary in a few years.
We’re one of the few professions that don’t get raises like we should. Everything went up but our pay.
And probably THE most important profession in modern society.
Our system is not based on inflation, sadly. It's based on other formulas per student attendance. It never was intended to cover inflation. There have been many studies that show that teacher salaries have actually decreased for many years due to inflation and how states treat school funding. Too many think that only women are teachers and that they are married to guys that make bank. Too many people think teachers should be martyrs for the cause because they see in movies how "fun" and "rewarding" it is to be teachers with students that are witty, well-behaved, motivated, and give us treats like apples and wine out of respect and admiration.
Not with the inflation that came with this president
What did the administration do before this one? Did you get a raise then? No!
democrat policies have put me in the poor house. life was good before fake covid and these new world order democratic money laundering schemes to Ukraine
Yeah, Biden was wrong when he put in place Covid restrictions in 2020. Oh, wait.....
What is a raise….
I don't believe anyone's does at this point with inflation at around 7-9%. Most school districts may have given a very small raise of 2-3% and maybe a hiring bonus. The big surprise is going to be when more and more teachers rush out the door to retire and they find no replacements. I know of MANY teachers, counselors, Speech Path's and the like that will be quitting this year and next year. It isn't going to be pretty. I think graduation from a brick and mortar building is going to rapidly become a thing of the past VERY fast here. Just remember that those changing your depends in the nursing home won't be able to write cursive or tell time. Kind of frightening really!
Not at my district! The last cola we got was in 2012!
My answer is let your teaching job help you learn a side gig that also earns money. I teach robotics and drive this thing under yachts to clean algae and barnacles
My wife makes 4X what I make. I sacrificed when the kids were born so I could be there for them.
Does anyone’s?
Considering that most households still are not earning as much, in inflation-adjusted dollars, as similar households in the early 70s', I would have to say, "no."
While I was in middle school, my 8th-grade teacher bought a house on the same block I lived on. There is no way that I can afford the house I grew up in.
Rising Star
I'll get a $500 raise this year. So, no.
I don't think they even take into account the inflation rate when giving us an increase. It's just never enough. How does it look like on your end, OP?
My pay kept up with inflation in 2000, because there wasn't any inflation. CPI was flat for the year.
My pay is not keeping up with inflation this year, because it's 7%, and I'm not a CEO.
Absolutely not! If so, I would be making at least $65k. I'm making around $40k.
It's so upsetting how any industry in America completely disregards inflations and is like 3 years behind on giving their employees their respective salaries.
hahah I can't even afford a run down apartment and I've been teaching for 16 years.
I teach in MA. Are you at a private school? We are paid well at my school.
NO. If I were not married, I could not live on my paycheck.
