Does your school have a policy concerning cell phones? Two years ago, I decided to let the students keep their phones face-down on their desks and did not have a problem if they...

Our school's policy is that students should have them off or on silent in their backpacks during class. We are almost 1-1 with tech sk there is no reason the have them out for research or what have you.
They can talk or text or scroll during breaks and passing period.
The problem is as someone else posted... EVERY TEACHER HAS TO SUPPORT THE POLICY. Some teachers believe they are the exception so they let them take it out as a reward or to listen to music while silently working or if they have finished all their work (which, how does all the work ever get finished?) or whatever they believe their exception to be. That's where, like any other policy or standard or expectation, things break down.

Exactly!

You can’t reverse technology. Parents get upset more than the teachers. I get upset because my phone alerts me about parent conferences and teacher meetings. It’s a classroom issue. Be a teacher and establish rules

Our school made kids turn them in when they entered the building this year. They were stored in the office and handed back to kids at the end of the day. The end of the day was a little messy, but overall, I loved it. Last year kids were awful with them.

That is awesome! Did the kids really give them up for the whole day?!

I feel like this is the exact same conversation my school used to have about hats.

About everyone following the same policy, I agree. As far as the amount of focus taken from learning for each, phones win by a landslide.

Glanced at it to see a notification. That seemed to work pretty well for the most part. Last year, our school cell phone policy stated that the phones were to be collected at the beginning of class so I purchased a holder for them (the school offered to purchase one for those who wanted them to). MOST students were willing to turn theirs in but a few refused. Of course, the smart watches were still a bit of an issue with some. And some who turned theirs in would "forget" to turn it on silent or "do not disturb". SIGH!

I think a policy is definitely needed. This is going to keep growing as a problem as adolescents will be getting their phones at younger and younger ages and mirroring what they see their elders doing. Whatever works to keep their focus on the classroom, keep doing.

And the policy needs to be upheld in EVERY classroom. It's frustrating when some teachers do and some teachers don't.

like

Our schools policy is no phones out unless the teacher allows students to use them (select apps). Students in my room really have no access to computers for any kind of research so I have allowed them at times—but I hate it because once they use them once in the classroom they think they are able to use them all the time.
I do allow my older students to listen to music with headphones as long as screens are down on table.

I would also let mine (before we started taking them up) listen to music while they "worked" as long as they found what they were listening to and turned the device face-down. This year, I allowed the students to suggest music for a classroom playlist (that's a whole 'nother story. SIGH) 😂😂😂

We have a no-cell phone policy and it’s the best thing ever! We have 1-to-1 devices. There’s absolutely no reason they need a phone during school hours. It’s more distraction that it’s worth

I'm so stressed and nearing my limit 😪. My design partner for several years now, loves to pretend she's the CD and markup my work. Historically I've let it slide because she has good suggestions. But lately she outright changes my copy and tells me later. I'm easygoing and they're good suggestions so I try to ignore but its getting worse and borderline disrespectful. We work exclusively together so if I rock the boat its going to get even more uncomfortable. What would you do?

I definitely have trouble focusing in general and have always been pretty dozey/aloof but have somehow gotten by and am now a third year associate who is doing okay without it. Do you think getting Aderall could help even though I’m doing fine? Maybe I’ll go from good associate to great

Question for senior female bosses. I have an opportunity to network with a senior woman across the pond - what, from your perspective, makes for a good mentor/mentee relationship? My only female mentor is my direct boss and my other mentors are senior men that I’ve known for years and have a relaxed / friendly relationship with.

I really want to get the most out of this but haven’t built a formal relationship with a senior woman before (particularly with a culture difference)

Last Spring I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. When I was diagnosed, I think I had had it for several years. My doctor put me on a diabetes med (my A1C was 10.2 and my blood sugar was 270). I knew I didn’t want to deal with the adverse effects of this disease, so I made some drastic dietary changes, started exercising, and brought my blood sugar down. I am now back in the pre-diabetic range, and I got off my diabetes meds. I lost 40 lbs. and feel great! Take care of yourselves! It’s important
