We use detention for behavioral issues, and call kids in to “Success Period,” a full building study hall, for academic issues
My school has lunch detention (administrator assigned for various offenses) where students sit at a certain table in the cafeteria and are not allowed to talk (I assume they are not allowed to be on their cell phones, but I've never actually looked into the specifics of lunch detention) and after-school detention (mostly administrator assigned, but teachers can assign it when students reach a certain number of tardies in class periods beyond 1st period. 1st period tardies are handled by the attendance clerk.)
Yes, we have administrator assigned detention—lunch and after school. Teachers don’t assign detention at our school. We do have a lunch time study time. (30 minutes every day) and 30 minutes after school—teacher determines the days they offer this option. We can do before school but that is entirely up to the teacher.
The class I teach in is EBD so no we don’t use detentions but there are reasonable consequences for my kiddos actions
