Consider adopting a dog that is already housebroken. Easier and less likely to chew on your furniture, not to mention the unconditional love you will receive for rescuing it.

Doggie daycare has been the best thing for my separation anxiety pup. I usually wfh, but when o can’t, both dogs go there.

I would reconsider a puppy and look at a slightly older rescue. They can’t hold it long until they are approx 6 months old. House training a puppy is hard if you’re not home.

I always vote for older dog adoption. As others have said consistency and training. Dogs love to please and training allows them to do that better and more often. Also, the crate training comment is a good one. Make their crate a safe, enjoyable and relaxing place for them to be..NOT a punishment place. That makes a word of difference.

World of difference.....jeez.

Potty training will be the hardest if you get a puppy.... For mine I made a big play pen with blue plastic underneath that you can buy from any home depot.... Way easier to clean when they had a accident... After couple of months of training she didn't need it anymore.... Puppy proof the house as you will be surprised how much they can chew into stuff especially when they have puppy teeth.... Ensure anything that can be toxic is not at their level.... When travelling hopefully one of you is home after work and have someone to take the puppy out during the day.... I have a dog walker and he takes them out for couple of hours during the day with other dogs....

Thank you all. So helpful. I need a relatively hypoallergenic dog and struggling to find a ~1yo+ dog like that. So I think we will have to go with a puppy. Question about that - any experience leaving puppies (12 weeks+) more than 2 hours alone. I’ve been reading some blogs and people were saying that they were working up to one hour for 2 months after adopting. Sounds totally not feasible for anyone who does not stay at home. Also, any thoughts on whether there are any downsides to daycare for a puppy 12w+ (assuming they have the vaccinations)?

like

99% of day cares won't allow a puppy without the vaccinations.... After that you should be good as long as they don't leave the puppy unsupervised with big dogs as the puppy might get scared.... Puppies are very curious and fearless unless they have a bad experience.... I spent an hour or two each day taking my pup to socialize with other dogs and people especially near the train station.... That way puppy got used to other dogs and people....

I started a new job at an agency a couple of months ago and since the pandemic, the agency has gone fully remote. I feel like I am having trouble making friends & connecting with people. Most of my coworkers all worked in an office for years together pre-pandemic, so they are all obviously friends in & outside of the workplace. I feel like I just can’t break through the wall.

Any advice?
