This is timely as I am leading a large undergrad recruiting initiative and was just talking to my brother (smart kid graduating from an Ivy with good grades, strong background) about messages that may resonate.
Ultimately he said the variety of work is a big selling point, because he said him and most his peers just really arenāt sure what they want to do yet, and the optionality consulting provides is really compelling.
One thing he advised against was making direct comparisons to tech. He said that one of the biggest things him and his generation look at is maximizing income per hour worked. And I donāt think you can compete with the high salaries and good WLB of tech versus the decent salaries and poor WLB of consulting regardless of any other factor like project verity, prestige, etc.
-Diverse, interesting work so you are 2x stressed every project because you have no idea what youāre doing yet...
-2x the working hours at 2x the intensity means you learn 4x as fast. Of course, your health will also deteriorate faster but itās not 4x so net gain.
Doing my undergrad so I think I may be a part of your target audience.
Are you hiring for tech consulting? I think people who go into top tech companies (FAANG) have a very different skillset, personality and interests in comparison to folks who go into strategy consulting.
Optionality and travelling are big selling points. Another one thatās often overlooked is career progression. Iām making very generalized broad strokes here, but consulting pays a lot better later into your career (when you make Partner).
