I quite literally just spoke to a recruiter about K&E Texas lateral openings. Absolutely not. Bullet dodged.

The fact that they are still hiring tells you it’s not a stealth layoff…

like

I’m at KE and one of our juniors had friends that were actually let go - supposedly they were all billing around ~1600 hours but ALSO saying no to people because they were “too busy”. I’m sure there are exceptions to that, but sorry, you don’t get paid $200K+ to work less than a 9-5 when everyone else on your team is absolutely drowning in work (and is probably billing close to 700-1000 hours more per year than you).

It sucks and the economy sucks, but they also willingly came to work at KE where it’s known that you need to work. Assuming that they were actually given work and offered work (which it sounds like they were per some their own friends), I don’t get why people are in a tizzy about this.

I have become the associate I used to hate by saying all of this, but it doesn’t make it untrue.

Kirkland is still actively hiring so I don’t think it’s stealth headcount reduction…

I’m very much an attorney at KE. I’m disgusted by partners who will fire people into a horrible market (derailing careers of my good friends who are great attorneys) instead of delaying their kitchen renovation by a few months.

I’m also a militant Marxist, so I hate myself too for being here. Few are without sin here.

likefunny

It’s nice to hear some shame, though it’s not much practically. And btw you’re not that much of militant marxist then. More like a champagne socialist. Get out before you don’t understand which way is up anymore. Your parents will be just fine if you go in-house with great benefits and depending on the gig you might do less evil.

Yeah I recently gave notice at Kirkland and two partners basically told me I would have been laid off anyway. Like why tell me that, pretend you’re sad I’m leaving lol.

likefunnysmart

I’ve heard of this happening more than once smh

Wild to me how quickly people from Kirkland come in to all push the same narrative (people turning down work) about exactly why this happened and who’s at fault, lol. Totally normal behavior, guys

likefunnysmart

P5, as one of the ones left that does work hard, can confirm we are most definitely NOT happy to see them go….

I’m at K&E and I don’t see why everyone is up in arms on this. Everyone knows people are let go for performance reasons, business is doing worse, or otherwise. If you think everyone is making shares, you’re delusional. I also don’t think OP is at Kirkland. If you were, this wouldn’t be shocking for an associate who’s been there more than a year. Also how are you ashamed for all of us? I have no input on this choices. And unless you’re on the firm committee, neither do you. It also shouldn’t have taken an ATL article to know people got let go in the past month.

likefunnysmart

Are you serious? It’s because Kirkland is a notorious sweatshop in already sweatshopy big law. And other firms at Kirkland’s peer level aren’t doing stealth layoffs like this (at least not reported yet) despite the market downturn. It makes it look like Kirkland has poor planning and poor firm management if they have to stealth a bunch of associates during a market dip that’s not even at recession level yet.

I’m a corporate associate at Kirkland Houston. First of all, this is old news, which makes me think you aren’t actually at Kirkland. This was discussed to death over a month ago in the K&E bowl, the BigLaw bowl, TLS, and through in-person gossip at the firm. You and ATL are way behind.

Second, the article says 20-25 associates, which is less than 1% of our 2700 associates. Sorry, but that’s not something I feel like worrying about.

Third, from what I hear gossiping with SPs, the firm is doing perfectly fine financially and Texas in particular is actually quite busy. I know many associates and NSPs billing over 200 and even 250 the past few months, including myself. It’s funny to cite the Texas offices as being hit a slowdown when energy and infrastructure are both currently hot (aka the areas we get tons of work in).

Fourth, people who are bad at this job and/or refuse work despite always being slow definitely exist. I’ve worked with some of them, and it’s a shock to no one when those people get cut at review time. It also shouldn’t be news to the people getting cut, since they should be aware of their hours and the feedback they’ve been getting. Sucks for them, but I’m glad I won’t get staffed on a deal where I get fucked because they ghost and I have to do their job as well as mine.

These postings just confirm why I was like hell no to BL. Love my position in a regional firm actually helping ppl and making decent money. I hope these kids weren't living that golden handcuffs lifestyle.

Why is everyone mad the regional firm guy called some of the BL losers out

K&E senior associate here. I’m not a big fan of a lot of K&E decisions, but we didn’t fire anyone for the past two years (except for outrageous shit) and now that reviews are in it’s just normal that a couple of people don’t meet the standard and are being let go. As others have said in this thread, if you’re turning down work while billing <1800h and others are drowning in work, that’s what happens. Combine that with people that just lateraled for the signing bonus but always planned to dip after their 12/18/24 month clawback period is over.

A27 - I’ve been looking at postings and usually the ones at K&E mirror pretty closely WH. It was a joke because, in my view, they target the same talent for any given cycle.

I also wonder how many associates took a position at Kirkland to get the lateral bonuses offered with the idea of just keeping head down for a year and then leaving. I know if I went there that would have been my strategy. Luckily hiring market isn’t dead so I have to imagine many if not most will be able to recover, hopefully. It would suck if this were juniors and not laterals however

like

Listen, it’s not a gravy train.

[saw that email on ATL and still proceeded to lateral to KE]

Slow clap. This is so accurate - don’t come to rave and be surprised it’s loud. Hours matter at KE. You have to work really hard. If you don’t there might be a crazy M&A year like 2021 where KE can’t afford to lose a single person, but that catches up when things normalize or drop and underperformers get their due. It’s good for culture. I work at a firm where 10-20% of our attorneys mail it in and it pisses everyone else off and brings down morale.

Lots of defenses here. Everyone knows k&e has the worst rep ever.

As a first year at K&E struggling to ramp up, this is concerning.

A handful of layoffs around reviews is clearly innocuous - obviously there are dozens of low hours slackers in K&E's thousands of lawyers. Good luck convincing the on here crew, my condolences for your firm's turn under the gun.

like

You’ve summarized ATL generally

K&E isn’t for everyone. For all those on this thread saying they’d never work there, good for you, they don’t need 100% of lawyers to want to work there. Not everyone is cut out for it and that’s ok. No need to be so dramatic about this, seems like they cut loose the low billers, which they are entitled to do.

like

I’m a 33 year old former K&E associate lol. Don’t quite think I fit into the boomer category and was never a partner there.

I have a 25K loan from my MBA. I paid off 100k whole, after graduation. 3 years ago, I moved my loan from federal to private ( SOFI) account. I recently lost my job. I have applied for unemployment, as the severance that I received will only cover for 2 months. Together my husband and I used to make less than 250k after tax. Now, with a loss of pay , we are going to make less. Do you think I will be eligible for Loan forgiveness?
