Due to Covid, I was let go from my firm after only a few months of working there. I’ve since been rehired in the last few months. This is a new area of law for me and I’m not enjoying it at all. How soon could I think about leaving? I’m going into my fourth year and don’t want to get pigeonholed.

The last two employers I had I hated the work at first. In time, I grew to love both areas of law. Take this time to learn deep on the area you are in before you switch.

Also, pay attention to the firm culture. If you find the firm is great but the area isn’t for you, see if you can handle some cases in another area to get yourself some variety. A firm that you like working in is hard to find.

On the one hand, you have an understandable reason to be looking soon, you took a position after losing a job due to Covid, that is through no fault of your own, and out of necessity. On the other, long term, the partners who consider you next time around (if your next stop isn’t your last) will see you as jumping firms. Fair or not, firms are investing in you, and want and expect commitment to the firm.
I’d give it at least a year

Exact same situation here. Curious to see what others say.

If you can get a job elsewhere in a practice area you’re interested in, I wouldn’t hesitate to leave. I don’t think future employers are going to judge a weird looking 2020 on your resume.

How do you get experience when no one will hire you? I wouldn’t mind hanging a shingle but I feel it’d be irresponsible to do so with no experience. Unlike all of my classmates, I never landed an internship/externship in law school - had only one interview. I was a PT law student, came from a CS background, and worked in IT throughout law school. I passed the bar exam on my first try (Oct 2020) and have only had a couple interviews out of the hundreds of applications I sent out. Any suggestions?

When I hear the words “well we took a risk based approach” in response to clear evidence that a control is operating ineffective and creates a gap, it makes me squirm 🫠. 99 times out of 100, when I follow up with, “so where’s the calculated risk analysis to prove this won’t leave behind an intolerable level of residual risk to the organization? Plus here’s all the examples of how the weakness is still exploitable from internal and external threats.” It’s like deer in the headlights. Just a rant.
