Due to social distancing rules, when the kids come into school in the morning, they have to immediately report to their classrooms. I get it, but I also don't have time to entertain them as I'm prepping for class. What can I do to keep them busy?

Whenever I need kids to kill time I always have them draw something. Then I’ll project them (anonymously) at the end. The results are amazing. Some sample prompts: - The combination of a shark and a giraffe - A penguin surfing, wearing at least 1 accessory - A shy owl - A bunch of stick figures at an apple party - A quarter (draw from memory) - My spirit animal I have my students draw after every test or quiz. It gives the IEP/504 students more time to work (without calling attention to it), allows students to practice their creativity, encourages playfulness around risk-taking, and eases anxiety after an assessment.

This has been the protocol in our elementary schools forever. So there is a list of morning activities posted. For middle school it should include prep for you classes by reviewing notes, reading, doing homework you forgot, etc. but you might want a stack of adult coloring and crayons for those that won’t do anything else

thanks for the ideas, everyone. so as long as I don't have to feel like "i'm on" and it has to be super structured. it makes sense to allow them socially-distanced social/free time since they don't really get that anymore.

EXACTLY!! 👍🏼

Have quiet music playing and have them to do something fun for morning work!

I have them do writing prompts in their writing notebooks.

If it’s before our hybrid class starts (for this reason I now have kids in my room 15 minutes before first hour starts) I have them turn on their computer & log in & then let them be teens like “normal” ie be on their phones or actually talk to each other. I am required to be in the hallway on hall duty (I know, why? The kids are in rooms, for the most part) so I can’t be in there with them but more than that they miss each other, or rather being with someone other than their family. However I do start teaching the moment class starts. I feel like that’s a lame answer compared to some of the beautiful answers above but it’s the truth. Also we aren’t allowed to give out copies, paper, or any kind of supplies, so when a kid needs a pen, I’m like pick a color you like because it’s now yours to keep.

I let the kids have their social time. It is a great time to talk to them and let them chat with one another about video games, books, what they are doing outside of school. They don’t get a lot of socialization outside the classroom with covid and need time to gab. It is one of my favorite times of the day. When the bell rings we are ready to go!

This is a great idea.

Since we are a 1-1 school, every student has a chromebook. I post interactive sites for students to log on and practice/reinforce a skill that has already been taught. After they complete the activity on-line they share their scores with me. Students really enjoy the interactive sites.
