Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?

Good question, not dumb at all. The answer varies by firm though. Ask your manager or recruiter.

Depends on the firm- for big 4 I’m almost 100% certain have a set allowance that is expensed and reimbursed, while Accenture last I checked still receives an actual per diem.

Depends on both the firm and the client. Some SOW specify actual expenses versus per diem.
It depends on the firm and the specific project. When I worked at KPMG we had several engagements that were per diem based. But a majority were actual expenses.
It was nice having the per diem though. Could pocket $80 a day if you played your cards right
Pro
Deloitte is reimbursement of actual expenses (must be charged on your firm provided Amex).
Pro
As others mentioned, depends on firm and client. I do miss those per diem projects where I would eat cheap and have cash for non-expensable fun
Vast majority of our projects are billed actuals, but again depends on client. Maybe some govt work is per diem but I don’t work on that side so can’t speak to that.

At ACN (when I was there) and currently at Big Blue, it has been per diems.
However, if there is a team dinner, you are expected to not be reimbursed for that dinner. The expense tool allows you to “uncheck” the meal and it auto-recalculate a reimbursement for just lunch & breakfast.
Another example: The last traveling project I was on, breakfast was included in the hotel room rate. I was instructed to remove “breakfast” from the per diem reimbursement.
I’ve always had per diem
