During an interview what is a good response to what are your weaknesses?

Surprised no one has said the only actual good answers to this — which is to state a GENUINE weakness, but always combined with a story about how it can also be a strength, AND/OR with a story about how you improved on it so it implies it’s not really a weakness anymore. You also need to tailor the weakness to the job. So for consulting, don’t say quant stuff or public speaking. Pick a genuine weakness that isn’t a massive red flag for the role (e.g. difficulty delegating (if the role isn’t a clear manager role) or inexperience with advanced data tools (but great excel chops and eager to learn), etc.)

When I’m interviewing global leadership candidates at clients I ask a much more ‘high gain’ version of this question. “What would you consider your three biggest development areas?” And my follow up is “and what would your peers say?” The purpose of this question is to prove self awareness rather than identifying weaknesses. I’ve called out folks for giving hidden strengths as answers by smiling and saying “that sounds like you’re answering a question about development areas by reinforcing your strengths, now let’s focus on your development space”

Look into the eyes of the interviewer, wink, and a say “I’m looking at one right now.”

I think we have a winner

I usually say public speaking and how I've worked hard to overcome that. It's a safe response, albeit boring. Interviewers, please stop asking this question. It's a waste of both our time.

likehelpful

I’ve responded to this on another thread: any interviewer asking the “what are your weaknesses” question is most likely following a script and frankly are poor at asking questions. The interview is a conversation, based on the job description and the candidate’s experience.

like

OP all of your responses in this post are so snarky; maybe irritability is a good one for you?

likefunnysmart

Spot on governor! You have a bright future in reading people.

The answer needs to be personal to you. What IS your weakness??? Don’t ask us!

Ice cream is my weakness.

Stare at your interviewer dead in the eyes. Don’t say anything. Slide over a card that reads: “People interpret my over-preparedness as arrogance.”

“Why don’t I tell you what my greatest weaknesses are? I work too hard, I care too much, and sometimes can be too invested in my job.”

Well, my strength is honesty! Like telling you that I would never work at a company which hires based on a response to something that stupid. And my weakness? Well, clearly not being able to keep my inside thoughts in check.

Legend😂😂😂

Public speaking It will be a disgrace if people still ask this outdated question during an interview.

like

Sadly they do! They word it in different ways yeah (like “what is an area/quality you’d like to work on or grow in”) but it’s the same BS.

My knees

If I was being honest I’d say that I get overly frustrated by the incompetence of my coworkers and superiors. But can’t see that going over well in an interview lol.

I always say I'm an over planner and sometimes I get so caught up I don't start executing (this is true for me I think the story is better when its a real weakness). I manage this weakness by make a list of what needs to be done before execution stage and I find following a list and checking things off avoids me getting into a loop of forever planning or planning for too long. I have a longer winded story with examples that I use when I'm telling in interviews

likesmart

Its kinda like the I'm a perfectionist (which I am) but with more depth of where I struggle in that area. Which is I want to plan forever to make sure nothing ever goes wrong which is impossible.

Legs. Next question - biggest strength? Bench press

"This is dependent on the situation. My weakness in one situation (relentless optimism/perfectionism in deliverables/other thing that could be good or bad if it was extreme) can be seen as a strength in another. I think the real key is assessing each situation so I am either using my strengths or partnering with others to use theirs to fill a gap where my strengths aren't the right fit."

Lots of comments here about how the question is BS. I've always had luck mentioning an honest weakness but adding the caveat of how I'm working to overcome it and how much progress I've made so far.

Interviewing in consulting 2017 & 2018, I got some form of that question every time.

Bullets.

like

You gotta build up immunity to bullets by being shot at by smaller bullets first.

Since most of us have several weaknesses up choose from — pick one that’s NOT a critical requirement for the job, and talk about what you’ve done to overcome/work around it.

Interviewing tip needed: I feel like a diversity hire at most of the companies I have worked for. A sentiment that is felt by other diverse colleagues at my job. When looking for a new job, what questions can I ask to find this out before I join? How can I assess whether a company truly values my skillset, pay equally, & promote equally? Whether there are implicit biases at play? My current job has 2 diverse bosses at senior level so I took that as a good sign but I was wrong.

Yesterday was a good day. I was really impressed with myself. I woke up at 5, practiced dance lessons, did two water colors, made breakfast and tea, got to work by 10, put in 8-10 hours of solid work and then came home. It’s been ages since I painted or danced. However today, I slept till 7:00, did not work out or have food. Still got to work by 10 and did 8 solid hours of work. Some days are good and some are just okay. And that is okay. Trying to build on my good days and we all can. :)
