During my masters, I accepted an offer with a B4 firm in a HCOL area. Due to extraneous circumstances, I am trying to live in a different city. Is it normal to ask the B4 firm the see if there are openings there in the same service line?

My motto: the worst they can say is no. You won’t know if you don’t ask. If you’re a high performer or have family circumstances, i have seen people bend over backwards to try to make things happen. First step though - is ask.

like

OP, they won’t blacklist you for asking. It doesn’t hurt to ask. If anything they would probably be more understanding now given the circumstances.

like

You can ask, but especially right now it’s HIGHLY unlikely.

like

Yes. It doesn’t hurt to ask. A year and a half ago I asked to transfer offices, and was approved. I moved 6 months later. It all comes down to demand where you’re trying to go, your reputation, and how supportive your team is. Maybe COVID-19 has put a damper on transfers, though, I’m not sure.

like

I don’t see why not. I joined a group where my senior sits in Ohio and our SM is in SF... I have never seen them in person but we worked just fine.

like

What service line are you in? If it’s general tax, probably not. However, if you are in some kind of “national group,” it’s totally possible and they may not care where you work

like

This might work in your favor. International Tax staffing is usually done by Region so as long as there is an opening your region, the local office should take you.

Yes, at least at EY. I know a guy accepted an offer with LA office but then was able to transfer to SLC before the start date

like

A partner hired you, not the firm as a whole. Moving to a new city resets the whole vetting process.

like

Not really. I’m responsible for hiring X amount of people per some budget regional gave me at these schools. I have a preference for certain schools across the US but as long as another PPMD signed off on you, I’m fine.

Now if you were senior or a manager, that’s different. We hired you for you.

If you do ask be very apologetic.

It happens all the time that we switch offers and cities. Highly recommend you do you.

I’d reach out to the recruiter with an email that you’d like a new office and are moving due to COVID to be closer with family. The recruiter might give push back (and it wouldn’t surprise me). If they do, find someone else and explain your situation.

If you became close to a certain partner during the recruiting process, I’d also give them a call (yes, a call) regardless to explain your case as a sign of respect to them and also asking if they can help.

At the end of the day, if we hired you and circumstances change, we’d still like to honor the full time offer the best we can if we can.

It’d be easier to switch prior to than after starting

Most firms are a ways away from being in the office, especially in ny/sf. I'd definitely talk to the recruiter about it, but it's possible that you'd be working with people remotely for so long anyway that they wouldn't care

Hello! I'm looking for DEI director or DEI program manager position that is remote. I'm currently a director of equity and multicultural outreach right now.

I am thinking of leaving my stable full time job for a contract position (ongoing with no time frame) for a bigger raise (making an exra $20/hour) with a large tech company. I'll still get benefits through Aquent so it's not a huge loss. It just feels risky in terms of being a contractor and the potential for it to end at anytime. Seems like a good opportunity though to get my foot in the door and potentially apply for full time jobs later on

Rejection timeline?

I had a final virtual interview today with two managers (virtual position).

I usually assume the worst and think the interview went okay. There are some things that could've gone better but I don't want to dwell on them.

After the interview, I emailed my recruiter and asked for the managers' emails. I got even more anxious waiting for his response so I ended up finding them anyways and sending them thank-you notes. I interviewed on a Friday afternoon. Am I overthinking?
