Vary typical at Deloitte. SM I was working with at Deloitte would join calls from India while on PTO at 2am his time. When I asked him (1:1) why he was on - his response was, I have to do it - Partner expects it. 🤦‍♂️

While bad - I dont think you can paint a company as large and varied as Deloitte or even an ethnicity as large as Indians with this broad a brushstroke OP. Empathize with your particular situation; reach out to other senior folks who can help correct this.

And to be clear, I’m not saying this in any sarcastic manner. I’m approaching this from the perspective that perhaps he was unaware you were taking time off.

With that said, I have always maintained an open line of communication with my teams so I know when they will be out. Moreover, I make sure my engagements don’t rely on any single person to be the sole source of knowledge to make sure my team can still function if somebody is out.

PTO is there for a purpose and people need to be allowed to step away from their work. I have the rule where I will roll you off immediately if you respond to emails while on PTO. I want you at your best when you are working, so that means completely shutting off work to recharge during PTO.

A couple of years ago the SM on the project subtly implied that I cancel my 10 days long PTO that I had set up 4 months prior, which everyone on the team was aware of. I politely said no. After coming back from they rolled me off in a week. Good riddance.

As a Deloitte SM - I feel you.

I was on family leave but had to sign in to approve time every week, submit period financials, and approve invoices because there was no one but the partner and a manager and the manager wasn’t high enough level (per the partner). He would even text me if the invoices had Ben out for 24 hours as a “friendly reminder.” Ugh.

Come back from leave in feb, and he rolled me to the bench March 1st. The manager told the partner I created a toxic environment after I jokingly said she’d have to approve time while on PTO when she asked to set me up as a proxy. When I challenged him he said disconnect rules don’t apply to SMs. Partner is now an MD and we lost the project so at least there was a little karma there.

What level are you? How long were you gone? Unless you were gone for a long time, and your SM is rather trying to keep you “in” on an important opportunity, this sounds like wholly unnecessary.

The only way I could see this maybe being acceptable is if you were on PTO for a pretty extended period of time, like 4 weeks+, and you were going to be back to the office in the next few days and SM wanted to make sure you had an idea of what was going on before walking into shitstorm. But even that’s questionable, to me PTO means dont contact me.

Junior here. How common is it to be nudged off a brief when you can't get ideas through internally? My partner and I are often put on the same briefs as more experienced (sometimes senior) teams. As a result, their work tends to make it through to the client presentation while most of ours dies somewhere along the way from CD to CCO. Is this worth worrying over?

EY wants me to be in base location within couple of weeks of joining and D by June end I believe.

I have a lot of abuse in my past (physical, mental and emotional). I know it’s shaped who I am today. I sense that because of my history I display non-ideal characteristics (anxious, stressed, not confident). It’s been brought up through my work and i’ve identified it’s something to work on.
