During the initial screening call the recruiter asked me for salary expectations I said it was too early to tell. I asked them to share a range & they did. Now that I’ve finished interviewing they’ve followed up & asked me again about salary expectations. I replied with a range between 5-10%>the high end of their range based on market research & my experience exceeding their requirements. I’m concerned the hiring manager will discard me b/c my counter was higher. Thoughts?

Absolutely not. They expect that.

The first offer is almost never the highest. They’ll either tell you it’s non-negotiable or accept your counter.

Good luck 👍

If they asked again they may be comparing you to another candidate who they feel is strong and the salary expectations may be a differentiating factor. If the range you have includes the minimum you expect, if they don’t move forward look at it as they were not able to meet your minimum. There are other companies that will.

From what ive seen (manager roles and below) the first offer is always mid point of range.

like

They may not. They expect you to negotiate. Its totally normal.

Update- they cited an HR error and came back 5% lower than the lower end of the bracket that was conveyed during the screening call.

I’m considering a position as an account director at a large agency coming from a media director role at another. (I’ve been client facing for years) are there any hard and fast rules of client management that typically media people wouldn’t deal with DTD? Note: this is more of strategist role and they were looking for heavy media experience but this position is unique in that it will also serve as the liaison between the analytics, creative, and media agencies.

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

A recruiter presented an offer at X salary plus benefits. When they offered the job I accepted via email with x salary + benefits. I had to wait a week for the official offer letter to come from the company. When I received it, it stated a lower base plus bonus- combined were lower then the x base I accepted over email with the recruiter. There is a $12k discrepancy in the base salary now. How can a recruiter fix this mistake?

Asking for an increase soon and curious what metrics or evidence would be best to present my case. I would really like to grow within rather than jumping ship.

Hi all! My team has grown by three people in the last month. For the last 4 years it had solely been my responsibility for all job functions within my team. HOWEVER - I’ve now come to find out that one has a higher job grade, title, etc from me off the get. I got a surprise promotion back in August and because of that, didn’t get a chance to negotiate my raise. As year end eval is coming up, would anyone in my shoes be expecting another relatively small adjustment because of the typical year end process?

I’m a web developer and I’ve been with the same company for 14 years. I’m making $45,000 a year. I’ve asked for a significant raise several times as my work load has only been increasing. I get 1% raises and that’s all. Not sure if I should just go freelance at this point or keep pushing for more and hope it works out. If you’re a web developer, please share your salary! I work in Manitoba, Canada.

like

When requesting a raise, has an employer ever asked you for the cost of living? As an example- asking you to list out a future mortgage payment if you purchase a home, the cost of health insurance for your family, etc. Seems intrusive and weird. Raises should based on value, not what a mortgage costs…. but maybe it’s common.

Offered $115K with a $5K sign on bonus for a senior position in risk at a similar consulting firm. I had noted in the beginning I had previously received a $120K offer from a bank that I had declined because it was a hybrid role. Since this is a remote role, I'd be happy with this amount but I was wondering if I should negotiate. 6 years of experience, no license, NY. In addition, I have a vacation already planned in first 2 weeks of July. Should I add the delayed start date to my negotiation?

I am in the process of drafting a salary increase request letter and I am unsure whether or not I should put a specific amount or leave that out.
To preface, I have taken on a lot more responsibility/positions and I am wanting nothing less that 20.5% of an increase. Is that too much? With it being a fairly high ask, it’s it better to actually mention it in the letter?

I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

How do you handle when you get offered a surprise raise but it’s lower than what you would have asked for yourself? I wouldn’t want to come off ungrateful but I also don’t want to accept less than my value. I have had this happen to me many years ago and I didn’t negotiate. A happy moment became a bit of a let down.

Could I accept the other now with the condition that there’s another evaluation 6 months from now or during the actual performance review season?
