The day after I submitted my resignation, I bumped into one of the very senior managing partners for my practice in our office in a client city. I had met him a few times before and he knew my name, but I hadn’t worked too closely with him before. He asked me if I had a moment, and this is more or less what he said:
“I just heard from A that you’re leaving us, and I’m sad to hear that. Over the next few days, I’m sure there will be a few people who will try to convince you to change your mind and stay. I won’t try to do so, because generally when good people decide to leave, they’ve put a lot of thought into it and have already made that decision in their mind.
I just wanted to stop by and congratulate you on your new position, and also thank you for all the fantastic work you’ve done here. If there’s anything that you think I or the practice could have done better, just reach out and we can have a chat. But only if you’re comfortable and have time. I know you’ll be busy the next few days.
Congrats again, and I’m really happy for you.”
And then smiled at me, shook my hand, and left.
I don’t remember much else from the last few weeks, but I do remember that conversation, his genuine smile, and our handshake.
I wonder how many times he’s pulled that trick on clients before you
I had a similar experience last week :)
It’s so lovely when the leadership has such a positive message at a time like this. It made my fairy lovely professional experience with the firm more complete. Really appreciated it
That’s nice. But go do your thing :)
My practice leader openly says that he expects people to leave eventually. If you look at the model not everyone will be a partner. They know you leaving on a positive note that you could be a buyer, advocate, or even boomerang. It's just smart business.
