It's finally here! 🍾🎉 Ok, maybe I'm a little more excited than I should be - but my article, Top 10 Predictors of Federal Employee Job Satisfaction, has been featured in IPMA-HR's HR News Magazine!
The September issue's article is the first in a two-part series that examines OPM's 2019 and 2021 FEVS data, respectively, to predict Federal Employee job satisfaction pre- and post- pandemic.

Probably when you ask yourself the question.
So true. This happens to me a few times already. And I am guilty as charged with this one.
Life is short. You should try shrooms and hopefully that will help you rediscover.
Grab a small funnel, pour 3 shots of hard alcohol in your anus. This is serious. The person you become following is who you are at your core - do you want to work, make love, destroy things, etc. Spiritual awakening of sorts, changed the trajectory of my life.
I’m sorry, you lost me at small funnel in your anus.
As a workaholic I agree. The fact that our culture practically requires an unhealthy work life balance means that instead of me reaping a financial reward for my current problem I'm just missing out on life to get to normal.
A healthy life should be more attainable for people.
I’d probably draw that line at losing a relationship? (Depends of course on other compatibility factors). I always tell my husband (of 7+ years) that the minute work gets in the way of our relationship (+ that with our young kids), I will drop work. I enjoy it but it is not and will not be my life.
But then again, that red line is different for everyone. It may be societally easier to draw that line as a woman / mom.
If you’re deprioritizing family more than 2x/month over work for 3 or more consecutive months.
I always feel that “asking the question” is likely that you are already concerned you are already workaholic. When what ever it is in the life, sex, food, work, alcohol … starts getting in the way of your life, then time to reevaluate. My SO was like you and almost married/tied to work 24/7. Then the company they gave his life for was sold and it was the wake-up call they needed. Jobs are just that, work. If it were fun it would be called “fun” and not “work”. But I sense you struggle like many of us; your self worth could be tied into your job. What is it you really want? Reflect, find that and I wish for your happiness
Something else to consider is why? I’ve experienced personally and seen often many colleagues focus on work as an outlet to not address relationship issues especially those at home. Focus on being your authentic self and working in your relationship. The time to avoid regret is now. As I approach retirement it isn’t regret of work but regret of missed home life with wife and kids.
If you’re addicted to work but you hate the work you do, that’s not good for anyone. You do have to earn a living. You don’t, however, have to work 20 hours more than you’re contracted to. Its still an addiction that, at its core, is unhealthy.
It will have negative effect on your life, overtime it will add up health issues.
We don't need to lay our lives on the line just to bring home the bacon. We need to at least stay healthy and have a sustainable work-life balance. It's always good to take a break from time to time.
When you start noticing that you don't have any hobbies anymore. When work-related goals are the only thing that keep you motivated on a day-to-day basis, it’s time to reassess your life and realign your priorities. In other words, you need to find something that you enjoy doing outside of work that isn’t related to your 9-to-5 responsibilities.
Perhaps, when you don't call yourself a workaholic. Being in denial is the first symptom of any addiction. If your friends and family keep telling you that you’re a workaholic, it’s time you took a long look in the mirror to discover what the causes are and how you can move forward. There are many treatment groups that you can join if you can’t seem to shake the bad habits away on your own.
